ND – SYRIZA confrontation over the episodes at AUTh

by

Against high tones between New Democracy and SYRIZA occurred on Thursday after current episodes at AUTh and the injury of a student and a police officer. In a statement issued by its press office, ND emphasizes that “SYRIZA continues to openly reinforce lawlessness in universities”. For its part, the official opposition “is committed to the restoration of university asylum and the abolition of the university police.”

The announcement of ND in detail

“SYRIZA continues to openly reinforce lawlessness in universities. Today, a group of people attacked the police forces that have been deployed to guard the space of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, which has been under occupation for 34 years and today a library is being built that will serve the students.

A student and a police officer were injured during the attack on the police and the ensuing clash. The incident, as announced by ELAS, is being investigated.

“We call on SYRIZA to respond directly, not to the SW, but to society: The AUTh area guarded by the police so that it is not demolished again with sledgehammers, should it become a library or not?” In the name of what academic freedom can any group hold academic space, regardless of the will of the university community?

Let SYRIZA stop supporting violence groups and lawlessness. “University spaces will be returned to where they belong: to the academic community.”

The announcement of SYRIZA in detail

“The episodes of police violence that continue to stigmatize the academic space of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki for a year, escalated dangerously today: blood was shed. The MAT attack, the police diversions that accompanied it, sent a student to the hospital covered in blood, who, along with other students and academics, were protesting against the successive police operations taking place under the well-known pretexts and the impending police deployment.

We wish the student well soon. And the government to consider its responsibilities, for a policy that in the name of real or constructed problems, deplores the university as a den of violence, causing with its attitude the escalation of violence. Let the government and the rectory authorities think about it, as much as we can prevent the worst. Today’s images at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki are reminiscent of times of police liquidation operations in Turkey, Latin America and elsewhere. And in any case, this is not European regularity…

SYRIZA is committed to the restoration of university asylum and the abolition of the university police. If the government chooses to provoke the vicious cycle of police-violence in the universities with the backward thinking that it will unite the far-right electoral audience, it will be refuted. In the meantime, we repeat: no blood! “Students, university teachers, society at large will defend democracy and will not fall into the trap of disorientation set up by the government.”
