Hatzidakis: We are against gender-based violence – Macho behavior is not tolerated

by

The Areti Georgili, the archaeologist who fell victim of beating by a driver, met the Minister of Labor Kostis Hatzidakis, in order to send a message against gender-based violence.

“This macho behavior should in no way be tolerated”stressed the Minister of Labor after his visit to the pioneering bookstore Free Thinking Zone of Mrs. Georgili.

“So I went to the Free Thinking Zone to see her, to tell her first of all not to put it down. And Virtue is not one to be feared. “But we talked both about the attack itself and about what we all need to learn from this unpleasant event, which left Virtue with abrasions, hacks and unpleasant memories.” said the Minister of Labor in a post on Facebook.

Mr. Hatzidakis referred to legislative steps which have been done in recent years to eliminate violence and especially gender-based violence, but also to support abused women.

“Violence must confront us all. Sexual violence even more so. “Let us hope that the attack denounced by Areti Georgili will be a stone in the quagmire of the indifference of those who may still live with the prejudices of past decades and are not in tune with the messages of modern times and modern culture.” stressed Mr. Hatzidakis.

Full post of the Minister of Labor:

In the photo with me is Areti Georgili. She was a victim of gender-based violence last week. The issue was also published in the media. Areti and I have been friends for thirty years. She is the owner of the pioneering Free Thinking Zone bookstore and head of the Lean In Network organization to encourage women’s participation, especially in work.

So I went to the Free Thinking Zone to see her, to tell her first of all not to put it down. And Virtue is not one to be feared. But we talked both about the attack itself and about what we all need to learn from this unpleasant event, which left Virtue with abrasions, hacks and unpleasant memories.

The first thing that comes to mind is this macho behavior that should in no way be tolerated. The second is the legislative framework that has advanced in recent years. I would like to recall both the anti-racism law and Convention 190 of the International Labor Organization on the Elimination of Violence and Harassment in the Workplace. The latter took place last year with law 4808/2021 and is accompanied by other initiatives, such as the Independent Department for the Monitoring of Violence and Harassment at Work, within the Labor Inspectorate. The support and financing of the Structure Network for abused women. The 24-hour line SOS 15900. And the “Panic Button” initiative, an early warning system for combating domestic violence. We have taken several initiatives as the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs in the last period, coordinated by the Deputy Minister Maria Syregela.

The third and perhaps most important thing that emerges from this attack against Areti Georgili is the dimension of the implementation of the law regarding gender-based violence. The legislative framework is advanced and I can say that in general it is sufficient. However, adequate knowledge of this framework is needed from all those involved, but also awareness of such phenomena from all those involved in the Administration and Justice. It is not enough to pass laws or believe that everything will be done in time. An initiative to inform and raise awareness of all relevant bodies is something we need to think about. And we will do it.

Violence must confront us all. Sexual violence even more so. Let us hope that the attack denounced by Areti Georgili will be a stone in the quagmire of indifference of those who may still live with the prejudices of past decades and are not in tune with the messages of modern times and modern culture.
