Mitsotakis: It is not lawful that the price of oil will increase due to the embargo on Russia

“It is not at all a fact that the embargo imposed by the European Union on Russia is legally leading to an increase in oil prices. “It’s something we will see in the coming days,” he commented Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, from Brusselsanswering a journalist’s question whether this move will “ignite” prices in Greece.

The Prime Minister added that the problem with gasoline prices is pan-European, “it concerns all countries, all countries have different prices because they also have different taxation on gasoline products. “You know that the government has already made a first small intervention, through the Fuel Pass, which in fact was significantly accepted by the citizens, almost 80% of the beneficiaries received the relevant amounts”.

However, he said that he is not ready at this time to make announcements.

“However, we are monitoring the issue and will announce, if there is budgetary capacity, our next decisions on the issue of gasoline when and if we are ready,” he said.

In any case, Mr. Mitsotakis added, what Europe has an obligation to do is to use all the financial means at its disposal, in order to deprive Russia of valuable resources for it, in order to finally stop this barbaric invasion of Ukraine.

Mr. Mitsotakis added: “We know very well that every package of sanctions has a cost, it has a cost for those who decide, but it has a lower cost for us than it has in this case for Russia. And that has always been the logic of sanctions: not to impose sanctions that will ultimately cost us more than Russia. And I think so far we have found that balance. “

Asked about the ceiling in the wholesale gas market, the Prime Minister reiterated that it is an extremely complex and very technical issue.

Equally complex – he added – is the issue of decoupling the electricity market from gas prices, which are currently the highest limit prices. As a result, they are sweeping all the cost of electricity across Europe. This is not just a Greek peculiarity.

Earlier, Mr. Mitsotakis announced that the European Council had instructed the Commission to consider proposals to decouple the price of electricity from the price of gas, including the Greek proposal to impose a ceiling.

The Prime Minister noted that now there is “greater dynamism and greater understanding of the problem.”

“In the beginning we were quite alone when we raised this issue. I now see many colleagues agreeing with us and putting pressure on the European Commission to intervene sooner rather than later, which will simply allow us not to pay unjustifiably too much for gas at a price paid by other countries. of the world.

If you look at liquefied natural gas, for example, how much does Japan pay for it, say, compared to Europe, because Europe is connected to the spot market with the TTF index, it pays much more for the same natural gas than other countries. “So, there, intervention is necessary,” the prime minister explained.

Analyzing the national plan for the relief of businesses and households from the increased energy costs, he stressed that Greece will not wait for the EU and added that this relief is already beginning and they are seeing it.

“Already the incoming bills, especially the corporate bills which are coming in on a monthly basis, are significantly reduced, the returns are already starting and appearing. And households will be able, as we have said, up to the amount of 600 euros to be compensated for the excessively high bills they paid. This is ultimately the interest of the household, this is the interest of the business “he added ..
