Glasgow, Thanasis Gavos
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis warned the leaders participating in the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow that the time to tackle climate change is running out, and that there is a need for immediate action.
According to the National Declaration for each leader, Mr. Mitsotakis briefly referred to six green initiatives of his government.
Initially, he noted the leading role of Greek shipping in the submission of proposals for detoxification from fossil fuels. He continued with tourism for which climate change is a “great threat”, saying that gradually Greek islands are turning into 100% green destinations.
He then noted the increase in the use of renewable energy sources and the goal of creating marine wind farms and stressed the goal of de-ligation of electricity production in the country by 2028.
It also focused on ecosystem protection measures, such as the plan to declare 10% of the Greek seas as no-go areas by 2030 and the mountain ecosystem protection program, and finally noted the process of turning Greece into a hub for green energy transport to Europe, noting the recent agreement with Egypt.
Mr. Mitsotakis, who also referred to the creation of a Ministry for the Climate Crisis, stressed that “there is no longer room for micropolitics” and that future generations “will not forgive” the failure to coordinate actions.
However, he expressed the belief that starting with COP26, there can be a successful response to climate change.
He gave interviews to Bloomberg and Sky News and had bilateral contact with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
