Mitsotakis from Thessaloniki: “The heart of sports beats in amateur sports”

The prime minister visited the “Poseidon” Sports Center to inspect the eight renovated basketball courts.

The “Poseidonio” Sports Center The Prime Minister visited in the morning Kyriakos Mitsotakis to inspect the center’s eight refurbished basketball courts and spoke with athletes and sports agents about the problems and prospects of amateur sports.

Mr. Mitsotakis referred to actions of the governmentwhich promote the creation of the new stadium of PAOK and the redevelopment of the environment in Toumba, but focused on amateur sports and the infrastructure of sports countries in schools and sports centers.

“Sports are not just big projects, I believe that the heart of sports beats in amateur sports and especially in young children,” said the prime minister. Mr. Mitsotakis underlined that young people must have the appropriate infrastructure to play sports for reasons of good health and well-being and to be able to develop their skills in the field of sports.

The Prime Minister noted that in addition to indoor gyms, interventions are being made in many open fields across the country, as was done in Poseidon to enable young people of all ages to have access to sports.

A match with veteran basketball players was also planned at “Poseidon”, which was canceled due to the rain. “I’m afraid we have to postpone our game for a day without rain,” he said.

Mr. Mitsotakis referred to his personal involvement and his love for basketball and even referred to the days when the Parliament team was formed, when he was an MP and the former basketball coach, Giannis Ioannidis. “For some reason we never lost,” the prime minister joked.

Mr. Mitsotakis also visited the closed facilities and the swimming pool. He then spoke with old glories of the national team and basketball clubs, including Zisis, Giannoulis, Tsiaras, Prelevic, etc. for issues related to the field of basketball. He drew particular attention to the need to combat sporting violence, violence on and off the field.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Sports Lefteris Avgenakis, who presented the facilities to Mr. Mitsotakis, the Deputy Minister of Interior (Macedonia and Thrace) Stavros Kalafatis, MPs and ND executives.
