Mitaraki’s satisfaction after EU decision on Immigration: Significant progress towards Greece’s goals

“Progress in screening and Eurodac regulations further strengthens our external border security,” said the Minister of Immigration and Asylum

The Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Notis Mitarakis, expressed satisfaction with the EU Council statement on the creation of a transitional solidarity mechanism, shortly after the completion the work of the EU Home Affairs Council in Luxembourg.

Specifically, the Greek Minister stated the following:

“Today we have made significant progress towards Greece’s goals in tackling the immigration crisis. We approved the proposal for the new Schengen border code, which recognizes the need for effective guarding of the EU ‘s borders, emphasizing deterrents and raising the issue of instrumentalization. Progress in regulations “Screening” and “Eurodac”, further enhances the security of our external borders. The Council statement on the creation of a transitional solidarity mechanism gives direct support to the front-line states, with relocations, and proposes the establishment of a permanent mechanism. “For the first time, Europe recognizes the need to create a permanent solidarity mechanism.”
