“Rhetoric that can further escalate tensions must be avoided,” said a State Department spokesman.

The State Department is watching them with great concern Erdogan threats and have argued in every way to the Turkish leadership that there must be de-escalation of tension.

A US State Department spokesman reiterated to ERT that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be to be respected and protected and in a clear message to Erdogan added that rhetoric that could further escalate tensions should be avoided.

The United States is urging its allies to refrain from using rhetoric that could further fuel tensions in the region, the State Department said in a statement on the recent escalation of Turkish rhetoric against Greece. Responding to a question from Greek officials in Washington, D.C., a US State Department spokesman said: “We urge our allies to refrain from rhetoric that could further escalate tensions.”

In his answer the State Department spokesman notes that “the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be respected and protected. We continue to encourage our NATO Allies, Greece and Turkey to work together to maintain peace and security in the region and to resolve disputes through diplomacy. We urge our Allies to refrain from rhetoric that could further escalate tensions. “Greece and Turkey are both strong partners and key allies of NATO in the United States.”

Finally, it is recalled that the State Department has shown quick reflexes on the issue of questioning the sovereignty of the Greek islandsas every time the Turkish Foreign Minister tried to raise such an issue with his statements, the US Department of State had taken an immediate position.

In fact, a State Department spokesman had made it clear in a statement on both February 11 and June 2 that Greece’s sovereignty over the islands was not in question.

As he had characteristically noted, “the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be respected and protected. “The sovereignty of Greece in these islands is not in question.”
