The macroeconomic situation in the Eurozone and the EU, the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, especially after the reduction of Russian gas supplies to the EU and the issue of energy, are the topics that will be discussed today by European leaders at the Brussels Summit.
“The current situation requires an in-depth discussion”, emphasizes the President of the European Council Charles Michel in his letter of invitation to the “27”.
The discussion will take place in the presence of the President of the ECB Christine Lagarde and will raise the issue of slowing growth in the EU (2.7% growth for 2022 according to the Commission, inflation (6.1% in 2022, according to the commission) and rising energy prices.
On the subject of energy, as stated by a European source, some countries “Push for stronger intervention measures”. Several leaders are expected to stress the need for a European solution to the problem. The Greek Prime Minister and his Italian counterpart Mario Draghi agreed in Rome to raise again the issue of the need to set a ceiling on the wholesale price of gas. It is recalled that the Commission was instructed at the previous Summit to study the appropriateness of setting a ceiling on energy prices. However, the majority of Member States remain cautious about setting energy prices.
European leaders will exchange views on all the above issues, without expecting concrete decisions.
