He emphasized that in the first phase what is needed is “to repel the offside goal in ’93, but even if it goes in let’s commit that the referee that will result from the popular verdict in the elections that are coming soon”

“We have before us another attempt to degrade the public university that we must collectively counter. It’s a matter of defending the public interest”, stressed Alexis Tsipras, speaking in the context of the public consultation on the “New Horizons for HEIs” bill organized by the Education Committee of SYRIZA-PS, in the Senate Chamber of the Parliament.

“An attack is being attempted against the public university whose main vehicle is the abolition of its democratic structures and the transformation of the academic and representative University into a University that resembles a private company”, noted the president of SYRIZA-P. He expressed his deep concern “for the fact that the government chooses in a ‘dead’ year, in ’93 – in monetary terms – to introduce a bill to parliament that changes the entire framework of the public university”. He said he is doing so at a time when society has too many critical issues plaguing it: “at a time when accuracy is the biggest issue that concerns households and businesses, at a time of intense geopolitical crises and tensions in the region, at a time which is an open secret that Mr. Mitsotakis is looking to find the date of the elections immediately after the end of the summer”.

Mr. Tsipras emphasized that the prime minister “is coming to speed up the electoral process not because he is responding to the request that we made six months ago, but because he is facing the big accumulated impasses that his own policy has created and magnified.” “In ’93 and from an offside position he is trying to put on the carpet a framework of total deconstruction and change of rules that govern the public university,” he said. He noted that this effort must be met with strong resistance from the academic community and political parties. He also described as “suspicious the fact that once again a structural change is being attempted in the context of the operation of the public university without the slightest consultation with its officials”.

Mr. Tsipras also noted that “an attack is being attempted against the public university whose main vehicle is the abolition of its democratic structures and the transformation of the academic and representative University into a University that resembles a private company”. He added that this attack comes after the two major wounds that have already been opened in the public university: the minimum admission basis, establishment of university police.

He emphasized that in the first instance what is needed is “to repel the offside goal in ’93, but even if it goes in let’s commit that the referee who will emerge from the popular verdict in the elections that are coming soon, will annul it and restore the essential dialogue about the necessary changes that the public university needs to become strong, quality, competitive again.
