The American ambassador to Greece emphasized that the country “offers examples of leadership in the wider region”
“It is relatively easy to be the US ambassador in Greece compared to 30 years ago, as the US has values and interests that intersect with the Greek counterparts,” the American ambassador said. George Tsunisduring its 26th round table discussion Economist which takes place in Lagonisi under the title “Antitheses, transformations, achievements in a changing world”.
As he pointed out, the two countries are based on the values of democracy, as well as respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty.
“I am shocked, like all of us, to see the attack in Ukraine. I never thought that in 2020 we would see something like this” he said characteristically and added:
“We have to commit that we will continue to support the Ukrainians, that we will continue to support peace and ensure that as soon as possible he can return to a free and independent Ukraine.”
THE American ambassador underscored the importance for the US of having partners to resolve global challenges. Greece, he added, operates with specific practices based on principles and values and is a reliable partner.
“He is always on the right side of history and offers examples of leadership in the wider region,” he emphasized.
He said that during his term he would like to see even more American investment in order for the US to help Greece become “not just a major defense partner, but an energy hub and a prosperous model economy in the 21st century”.
As he pointed out, this will have significant positive effects on all the Balkans.
“There have been very significant political challenges imposed on this region. And I think that Europe and the USA have made a lot of promises, but they have done little in terms of economic investment in the Balkans,” he noted.
“This is something we have to heal. It is something I hope to be able to work on together with the largest economy of this region in Greece. Because I believe that the Balkans must continue to move towards the European Union and NATO,” he stressed.
