“Laws are made for all citizens and not for one,” pointed out the Professor of Criminal Law and former Minister of Justice
Speaking to Status FM, the professor of Criminal Law and former Minister of Justice explained the legal dimension of the suspension of the execution of the sentence in the Lignadis case until the hearing at the Court of Appeal, which caused reactions Nikos Paraskevopoulos.
“In principle, we have legislation that provides for the possibility of the court to grant suspension if the first instance decision has been appealed. This is provided for by the criminal procedure. It is predicted correctly, it has always been predicted”, noted Mr. Paraskevopoulos.
As the professor mentioned, to a large extent the issue took on dimensions for two reasons and he explained characteristically: “The first was that with the announcement of the suspension there were social reactions and the second was because suddenly with the first awareness of the reactions, ERT reported that this it is due to the Paraskevopoulos law, and I also reacted to that.”
“The laws are made for all citizens and not for one”, pointed out Mr. Paraskevopoulos. The Professor of Criminal Law and former Minister of Justice clarified, speaking to Status, that “the citizen in any case has the right to criticize, it is the freedom of expression”.
He explained the legal side of the case, noting at the same time that “I cannot say that the decision is outside the letter of the law, but the law leaves a power of judgment to the court, a freedom of judgment.”
“I feel a personal indignation at the fact that an offender with a very serious responsibility walks free the day after his conviction, but this bothers me humanly, I do not criticize Justice”he underlined.
Mr. Paraskevopoulos also emphasized, on the occasion of the long delays until a case reaches the Court of Appeal, that in order to have faster justice, the state budget should allocate more funds.
