Georgiadis: Difficult but absolutely necessary the decision of compulsory vaccination in those over 60

by

“Difficult but nationally absolutely necessary” characterized the Minister of Development Adonis Georgiadis, the decision of the Prime Minister and the government regarding the compulsory vaccination of people over 60 years old. Speaking about the strategic investment bill, he said that there are times when in politics the national duty exceeds the political cost. It is judged what is the real love of everyone for the homeland and not the one that brings votes, said Mr. Georgiadis.

“Those of us who have a basic sense of patriotism and humanity, realize that, where things have reached, it is now a one-way street – and in the relevant vote in Parliament, it will be seen what each of us ultimately believes,” said Mr. Georgiadis.

Describing the current situation, he said that we have a 4th wave of the pandemic, which led to ICUs and death, in 97% of people over the age of 60, and 95% of them are unvaccinated. Although the government has given citizens time to get vaccinated, “unfortunately, a significant portion of these people remain unvaccinated,” he added.

As the Minister of Development characteristically said, “life has two paths: It would be easy to say, (that it is) their problem. They are not vaccinated. Some of them, several thousand, will die, but we did what we could. As long as we do not lose votes. This is politically easy, street, but immoral. There is also the difficult path, chosen by the Prime Minister, that I will obviously be unhappy but I will know that I will have saved thousands from death, that I will have saved thousands of families from mourning, that I will have saved the NSS from an insurmountable pressure, which “causes the pandemic and the insistence of people, especially of this age group, not to be vaccinated,” said Mr. Georgiadis.

Asked why Greece has so many deaths compared to other countries with the same vaccination rates as Austria and Germany, he said: “The answer is obvious: We look like a vaccination rate but at a vaccination rate of over 60 we are far behind. It is 90-100% in Northern Europe and 65% -70% in Greece, in this age group “.

At the same time, he assured the deputies of ND that this was not an easy decision. “We weighed it a lot. The doctors explained to us what the health risk was. “The evolution of the pandemic, even with the new” O “mutation, creates accelerating threats, in which the country must act quickly,” said Mr. Georgiadis.

Concluding, he said that, apart from the health dimension, there is also the economic one: Greece can no longer withstand another lockdown, a collapse of the NSS, people can not enjoy basic health services, because some decided not to be vaccinated and ended up in hospitals and ICUs . “So, now it will be seen who really loves the homeland and who is here to make difficult decisions and who for the votes,” said the Minister of Development.
