The law on police training was passed. ND, PASOK and Hellenic Solution declared “Yes” to the bill. SYRIZA, KKE and MeRA25 voted “against” the principle. On the whole, the parties kept the same attitude, with the exception of SYRIZA which declared “present”.
This is a draft law of particular importance for the police education and training of the Greek Police officers, said the Deputy Minister of Citizen Protection Lefteris Economou and noted that the operating framework of the training structures of the Greek Police officers is significantly improved and modernized, with an emphasis on the new Needs.
Our design, said the Deputy Minister of Citizen Protection, “has a progressive sign, it keeps what needs to be kept and changes what needs to be changed, it cures weaknesses.”
Mr. Economou responded to the charge made by opposition parties for a Police training system, of a military nature, which will not provide real academic education, with what the report of the Scientific Council of the Parliament mentions, on the legal status and character of the schools of the Greek Police. In any case, as he hastened to underline, a significant effort is being made in the context of upgrading studies.
“As the Deputy Minister of Citizen Protection and also as the honorary leader of ELAS, I have the deep conviction that the proposed draft of provisions ensures future professionals, executives of ELAS who will know their role and mission in depth. It creates a modern educational structure for police officers, more extroverted, more autonomous, capable of providing the Greek woman and the Greek police officer with upgraded quality training,” said the Deputy Minister of Citizen Protection.
Lefteris Economou pointed out that with the bill:
– increased formal qualifications are foreseen for the one-man administration bodies of the Greek Police Officers’ School and the Police Academy.
– an external evaluation is planned at the Greek Police Officers’ School
– a permanent procedure for assistant professors is foreseen.
Referring to the competence arrangements of the General Secretariat of Anti-Criminal Policy, Mr. Oikonomou said that the electronic surveillance that is currently being implemented as a pilot for only 8 people, with the new provision “implements a brave, essential step forward”, as it provides the possibility of geographical expansion of said institution and beyond the borders of Attica and Thessaloniki and thus the necessary foundations are laid, on the part of the legislator, so that more convicts and undertrials, who are in every corner of the Greek territory. At the same time, the creation of the necessary technological infrastructure is promoted so that this institution can be accommodated beyond the borders of the two major urban centers of the country, which is a necessary condition in order to make the international open tender, for the selection of a contractor, meaningful and not barren. henceforth, it will technologically support this institution, whose announcement will be published within the next few days.
Regarding the validity of the passports, which has changed from five years to ten years, Mr. Economou pointed out that the fee remains for the new 10-year passports at the same amount that applies today, for the 5-year passports.
