All the opposition parties agreed with PASOK-KINAL’s proposal for an immediate convergence of the Institutions Committee, characterizing it as a “major moral and political issue”.
“In a democratic society and in a modern European country, it is unthinkable that incidents of surveillance take place,” said Justice Minister Kostas Tsiaras in parliament, on the occasion of the indictment of the president of PASOK-KINAL, Nikos Androulakis, to the Supreme Court’s prosecutor’s office. reporting an attempt to hack his phone, as found by a special committee of the European Parliament.
At the same time, Mr. Tsiaras agreed with the statement of the government representative, Yiannis Oikonomou, that the independent judiciary is competent to take charge of the matter and initiate the process for its clarification, while the government will help in any direction needed, to throw plenty of light and no shadow left.
The issue had been raised earlier, during the debate on the Judicial Police bill, by all PASOK-KINAL MPs, with the party’s rapporteur, Haris Kastanidis, K.O secretary, Evangelia Liakoulis and parliamentary representative, Nadia Giannakopoulou. to denounce illegal anti-democratic action, to speak of “a major moral and political issue concerning democracy and the democratic rights of citizens” and to call on the government “to proceed with the immediate convergence of the Institutions Committee, so that the head of the EYP can give explanations and the president of the Authority for Ensuring the Privacy of Communications”.
All the opposition parties agreed with PASOK-KINAL’s proposal for an immediate convergence of the Institutions Committee, characterizing it as a “major moral and political issue”.
“Obviously it is unthinkable to accept that in a democratic society and in a modern European country, monitoring methods or recordings of this type can take place and certainly create most of what. There is already the statement of the government representative, which in a very specific way puts forward, on the one hand, the procedure that justice itself must follow, but of course also the government’s assistance in whatever direction the clarification of the specific issue is concerned”, emphasized Mr. Tsiaras and added:
“There is already in progress the preliminary investigation ordered by the chief prosecutor of Athens, when we had a similar phenomenon some time ago and of course I think that justice, in such matters, moves directly and firmly, without leaving any room for doubt, not much more discussion on issues and issues that to a large extent – we all know – have no relevance in a modern democratic society, but leave room for tolerance or cover-up of such events”.
“There is a clear position on the part of the Ministry of Justice, that the judiciary, alone, independently, with a procedure that is foreseen through its very operation, essentially takes charge of all these issues and initiates all these procedures, in order to clarify them completely and obviously there should be no shadows”, concluded Mr. Tsiaras.
“The position of the ND and the government is unshakable to shed light on the case of Mr. Androulakis and all the competent agencies must do their job properly. The government will support every effort to bring light to the complaints, so that no shadow, question or gray zone remains in these matters concerning democracy”, said the ND parliamentary representative, Haris Theocharis.
SYRIZA’s rapporteur, Alexandros Avlonitis, and the party’s parliamentary representative, Yiannis Ragousis, called on the government “to act immediately and without evasions, in order to provide explanations for all that has recently come to light”.
“It is a major issue of democracy and fundamental constitutional principles to trap the mobile phone of the party leader, Mr. Androulakis. There is a smell of scandal and the government cannot hide it,” said Mr. Avlonitis.
Mr. Ragousis spoke of “illegal parastatal actions of wiretapping” and added that his party, when it comes to power, “will not let them remain in the dark and will initiate the procedures for their criminal investigation, so that they are accountable to justice and to punish those involved”.
Haris Kastanidis spoke of a “major political and moral issue” but also of a “non-random and isolated incident”, and added that “the monitoring of the leader of the third party in political power is the tip of the iceberg”.
Mrs. Giannakopoulou, who pointed out that “there is now a question of the real functioning of democracy and concerns the independence of the political system” and Mrs. Liakoulis, who stressed that “the major political issues must be answered in the Institutions Committee , who, when and why they intercepted the phone of the leader of PASOK”.
The parliamentary representative of the KKE, Thanasis Pafilis, agreed that the Institutions Committee should be convened immediately, so that the heads of the EYP and ADAE could give explanations, recalling that his party had also reported illegal monitoring of the telephones of its headquarters, but until today, without to give answers.

The government must provide evidence, because there is a question of the functioning of democracy”, stated the rapporteur of the Hellenic Solution, Konstantinos Chitas, while the special buyer of MeRa25, Maria Apatzidis, underlined that democracy is constantly under attack.
