Turkey: Threatens to send more letters to the UN about the Greek islands

The objections of the Turkish foreign minister and the distortion of reality in the Aegean

From Cyprus, where he is traveling today in order to meet with his counterpart, but also to speak at the summit of the heads of the diplomatic missions of the Republic of Cyprus around the world, he is expected to answer in substance the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias in the new round of accusations and accusations that, this time, unleashed by Mevlut Cavusoglubut also of the “threat” to send a new letter to the UN about the Greek islands.

As it states kathimerini.gr, at the same time, Athens is preparing for a useful, but at the same time difficult, visit by German Foreign Minister Analena Berbock, whose staff has already informed the Greek authorities that the head of German diplomacy will raise the issue of pushbacks and mistreatment of immigrants. It is worth noting that the ambitious politician of the Greens has this issue very high on her domestic agenda, something that Ankara will definitely take advantage of. Indicative of Mrs. Burbock’s agenda is the very bad atmosphere that prevailed during her recent meeting with the president of Egypt Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Germany, on the occasion of the accusations of the head of the German diplomacy for violation of human rights by Cairo. The Greek side will once again raise the issue of arms exports to Turkey, as well as German reparations. Much more important for Athens is to explain to Mrs. Burbock exactly what Turkey has been doing in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean in recent years, as the German Foreign Minister will then visit Ankara.

In particular, a few 24 hours before the visit of Ms. Burbok in Greece and Turkey, Mr. Cavusoglu noted that Turkey is violating national airspace in response to alleged violations by Greece. He even announced new letters to the UN. As reported by Manolis Kostidis, Mr. Tsavousoglou said in an interview on TV 100 that Greek government officials accuse Turkey every day, while he noted that “we have prepared a new letter and will send it to the five permanent members of the UN. We will also send it to the EU. From time to time we also make updates against these lies and slanders.”

The F-16s

Regarding the F-16 issue, Mr. Cavusoglu said that the decision of the Congress is not binding and noted that “we want to get the F-16s, the consultations are progressing well, but we will not enter into a process that will tie us in handcuffs. Don’t get us wrong, but no one can put Turkey in such molds.”

Tomorrow Mr. Dendias, after meeting with Mrs. Burbok in Athens, will leave for Paris in order to have a first meeting with his new French counterpart Catherine Colonna. According to diplomatic sources, the deepening of the bilateral relationship will be discussed at the meeting, especially after the signing of the strategic cooperation agreement last September, but also the developments in the Eastern Mediterranean. Mr. Dendias will inform his counterpart about the content of the continuous threatening statements by the Turks. In the context of the contacts, the effects of the war in Ukraine, the development of European defense and the European perspective of the Western Balkans will be discussed.
