In his statements, Mr. Dendias said: “And something that connects the two countries and is not widely known: President Ho Chi Minh, the founder of Vietnam, fought on the Macedonian Front in the period ’16-’17 in the ranks of the French army.
We agreed, therefore, that there should be a bust of him in Edessa, which would highlight this fact.
And we also discussed the transfer of the ashes of the Greek fighter Sarantidis, who fought with the Vietnamese army during the Vietnamese War of Independence, and whom the Vietnamese remember fondly.”
THE Ho Chi Minh was a Vietnamese communist revolutionary and politician who served as prime minister (1946–1955) and president (1945–1969) of the People’s Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam).
Ho Chi Minh led the Viet Minh independence movement from 1941 onwards, establishing the communist People’s Republic of Vietnam in 1945 and defeating the French League in 1954 at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu.
He lost political power within North Vietnam in the late 1950s, but remained president until his death. The former capital of South Vietnam, Saigon, after its fall to North Vietnamese forces, was renamed “Ho Chi Minh City” in his honor.
