THE Athens’ satisfaction with Germany’s resounding support for the Greek-Turkish issue but also the analyzes of international media that see the strengthening of Greek alliances against Ankara’s isolation, increase Turkey’s irritation and fuel a new round of frenzy of the Turkish leadershipwith aggressive rhetoric that crosses the line.
The weapons of Turkish propaganda known and expected: falsification of history, degradation of the “opponent”, inversion of reality.
Two twenty-four hours after the German brake on Turkish revisionism and before Ankara has yet “digested” the “block” of the USA, on the upgrade and new purchase of Turkish F16s, the Minister of Defense of Turkey, Hulusi Akar came back with the same non-existent argument against Greece.
Falsifying history and invoking the London Protocol accuses Greece of expansionism. “They have covered the entire Aegean! Who is the expansionist? Even a high school student can see this. Here we are talking about a country that has expanded 5 or 7 times since its foundation. Who is the expansionist? Against Turkey” he said.
For the internal consumption and encouragement of his nationalist audience, Mr. Akar once again attempted to downgrade the deterrent power of the Greek armed forces calling on our country to “not spend” in short…
And of course he repeated him eloquent claim of demilitarization of the Greek islands calling Greek sovereignty into question. “They went and installed airfields, tanks., mortars. Then doesn’t that give us the right to self-defense?! Isn’t the installation of weapons under our noses a threat to our country? What will happen if we react? Isn’t the sovereignty of these islands debatable because of militarization?»
And of course in this climate, Turkey continues to threaten. He insists he may be envisioning a new summer of 2020 and the tension he caused then in the Eastern Mediterranean with the research “Oruch Race”, attempting to repeat it with the drilling rig “Abdul Hamid Khan”. But he is not calculating correctly, experts and analysts comment, as the summer of 2022 has very different characteristics, most importantly the “hypersensitivity” of the international community and all the great powers of the West towards any revisionism, wherever it comes from.
In each case Athens “leaves” Ankara to be exposed. Loyal to the path of International Law and the notification to international public opinion of Turkish challenges, it coolly and decisively responds to Turkish aggression, strengthening its alliances and the strength of the country’s Armed Forces and making the country a pillar of stability and security in its wider region Eastern Mediterranean, in a highly critical geopolitical period.
