A clarifying statement was made by the vice-president of the Parliament and MP N. Lesvos of the ND, Charalambos Athanasiou after their reports on the expediency of monitoring MPs for reasons of national interest which provoked a strong reaction from the opposition.
The statement of the vice-president of the Parliament
“Since there have been misinterpretations of what I said in an interview, I emphasize that I never questioned the patriotism of my fellow MPs regardless of religion. This does not follow from a careful reading of my entire position. What I clearly analyzed was my scientific opinion on declassification in matters of national security protection.”
What Charalambos Athanasiou had declared
“Let’s suppose that a member of parliament who has a religious orientation completely different from the Orthodox… Let’s say a Muslim member of parliament from Northern Greece… I’m not saying that there is any threat to God… If we suppose that he gives some information to the neighboring country, where will the immigrants etc… Why shouldn’t it be controlled? National security comes first here. If there is the procedure that the legislator provides of course (to monitor the phones). What does the implementing, executive law of the Constitution say? What does our Constitution say in Article 19? It says verbatim: ‘law defines the guarantees under which the judicial authority is not bound by secrecy for reasons of national security’. That’s what the Constitution says.”
