As the minister stated in recent weeks, there has been a major escalation in the phenomenon of illegal immigration. “We have arrested 60 foreign traffickers in the last few days who had set up rings to bring these people into our country,” he added.

He explained that traffickers try especially in the summer, when the waters of the river fall, they try to lead people to islands.

“Some people want the Greek police to be the boatmen,” said Mr. Theodorikakos, saying at the same time that “they should stop dreaming that we will open the borders and turn them into an open vineyard.”

Also for the islet in Evros where the 38 migrants were found, presented an official document of the GES which, as he underlined, clearly and categorically states that its coordinates are outside Greek territory and are located in Turkish territory. He added that the specific document will be submitted to the Parliament.

Also addressing Alexis Tsipras, he said that “today he should state clearly if he respects and accepts what the leadership of the country’s Armed Forces says.”
