On the occasion of the 31st anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence, the President of the Republic sent a video message to President Volodymyr Zelensky.

In her message, Mrs. Sakellaropoulou points out that Greece, along with the rest of the European states, expressed its unreserved solidarity with Ukraine and supported its struggle to choose its own destiny within the European family. She emphasizes that the resistance and faith in freedom shown by the Ukrainians is an excellent example of the fight against authoritarianism and expansionism, and the President closes her message with the wish that Ukraine will soon emerge from this tragedy.

In detail, in her message, Ms. Sakellaropoulou states:

“Dear Ukrainian friends,

Today’s 31st anniversary of your independence, instead of finding you celebrating, is sadly marked by your six-month struggle against the barbaric and unjust Russian invasion.

At the same time, your resistance and your belief in freedom are for the whole world an excellent example of the struggle against authoritarianism and expansionism. From this perspective, August 24 has a special symbolism this year.

From the very first moment, Greece, together with the rest of the European states, expressed its unreserved solidarity with Ukraine and supported your struggle to choose your own destiny within the European family.

Dear friends,

Our countries are linked by close ties of friendship and share the same values. In this spirit, I look forward to our continued close cooperation and hope that you will soon recover from this tragedy.”
