He characterized the parliamentary appointment process by the Institutions and Transparency Committee of the new governor of the EYPthe rapporteur of the official opposition Giorgos Katrougalos after the end of the meeting.
Mr. Katrougalos stated that “the attempt to cover up and evade the ND continued today. While all the parties had requested that the meeting of the Institutions Committee be preceded by the investigation of the very real responsibilities of Kyriakou Mitsotakis and of his Government, in addition to the pretextual summons to a hearing of the EYP commander, the governing majority once again threw the “ball in the ring”.
THE Conference of Presidentshad decided to hold the Institutions Committee meeting next week, we heard today with surprise that we are waiting for the ND to agree or submit its own proposals for this meeting to take place.
The very presence of the appointed governor of the EYP in the Institutions Committee was a new mockery of the parliamentary process, not only did it not attempt consents to fix the institutional loopholes but with its PNP, it first appointed the governor and then brought him in completely sham to elicit after the fact, the opinion of the Institutions Committee of the Parliament.
It is therefore not surprising that all Opposition parties voted against this proposal, even parties that traditionally vote “white”.
Finally, even from this same sham process, not only were they not refuted, but the certainties that the average Greek now has that politicians and journalists are being watched were confirmed.
We will not allow Mr. Mitsotakis to escape. We will request and insist that the natural perpetrators of the illegal surveillance, the former commander of the EYP (the late P. Kontoleondas), the nephew of the Prime Minister and his confidant (the late Grigoriadis) also come to the Commission, but we will also insist, so that for the investigation to reach the core of the case.

In response to a journalist’s question about whether the new head of the EYP, Themistoklis Demiris, answered “if other politicians and journalists have also been monitored”, Mr. Katrougalos stated “as the meeting process has characteristics of secrecy, I stick to what I told you, that essentially everything that the average Greek – not just us in the Committee of Institutions knew before the meeting – about monitoring politicians and journalists was confirmed”
