Mitarakis on the Evros incident: Foreign media correspondent pretended to be the translator

The Ministry of Immigration and Asylum has set itself the goal of building durable and long-lasting relations of good cooperation with representatives of Civil Society. In the context of this cooperation, permission was given by the competent Reception and Identification Service to members of a Non-Governmental Organization – registered in the Registry of the YMCA – which is active in the legal representation of unaccompanied minors, to enter the Fylaki Prison.

The delegation of the said NGO, as it turned out afterwards, included a correspondent of a foreign media, who submitted a misleading entry request as a translator, while the real purpose of the visit was to talk and conduct interviews with some of the 38 migrants identified before few days in Greek territory, who are still in the process of providing explanations to the competent authorities, reports the Ministry of Immigration and Asylum.

“To our regret, we find that the rules of journalistic ethics and confidentiality as dictated by the General Operating Regulations of the hospitality structures were violated at a minimum, as well as that the journalist in question consciously chose to blame the Greek authorities.

The Ministry of Immigration and Asylum will take all necessary legal actions”.

With reference to the incident, it is pointed out that the Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Mr. Notis Mitarakis, stated on social media: “There are still many questions about the incident in Evros as significant inconsistencies in the facts and descriptions are already evident.”

Overall, on the developments in immigration, at the initiative of Mr. Mitarakis, a meeting of the competent Permanent Standing Committee of the Parliament will be held on Tuesday at 16:00.
