The European Commission describes Turkish President Erdogan’s recent statements against Greece as “a source of great concern”, calling on Turkey to refrain from aggressive rhetoric and to respect the sovereignty and integrity of EU member states.
Asked to comment on the recent threatening statements of the Turkish president against Greece at the Commission’s press briefing today, the Commission’s representative in charge of foreign policy matters, Peter Stano, replied as follows:
“These statements are a source of great concern. We expect Turkey to refrain from escalating rhetoric and commit to good neighborly relations and not the opposite. Regarding its relations with Greece, we expect any open issues to be dealt with in a peaceful manner, through dialogue in good faith, with respect for international law and in accordance with the principle of good neighborly relations. Greece is an EU member state and the sovereignty and integrity of an EU member state must be respected.”
