Kapani is going to be rendered functionally, aesthetically and economically upgraded to the residents and visitors of the city, in the context of a major intervention by the Municipality of Thessaloniki for the regeneration of the historic market. The contract for the creation of an open trade center in Kapani was signed today (05/09) in the morning by the Mayor of Thessaloniki Konstantinos Zervasin the presence of the Deputy Mayor of Technical Works and Sustainable Mobility Efraim Kyrizidis and the technical advisor Dimitris Mitrou.
“In 18 months, a project of around two million euros will give a different image to a historic market of the city and will make the center of Thessaloniki – whether commercial or touristic – much more attractive”, said the Mayor of Thessaloniki Konstantinos Zervas. As he added, the shopping center, which had been abandoned for decades, is changing with a series of interventions, including the Modiano market and the regeneration of shopping streets around the metro stations, after the inclusion of the Municipality in a relevant program of the Fund Recovery.
The Deputy Mayor of Technical Works and Sustainable Mobility Efraim Kyrizidis spoke of a “very important intervention, which will upgrade the market as a whole and give it the role and form it deserves”, explaining that, among other things, reconstruction of sidewalks, improvement of lighting, placement of new urban equipment and in collaboration with EYATH replacement of pipelines. “The goal is to give life and a different image to the city’s covered market again,” underlined Mr. Kyrizidis.
“The market is going to be completely modernized”, noted the technical advisor of the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Dimitris Mitrou, adding that the Municipality of Thessaloniki is in close cooperation with the Historical Center Professionals Association for this project. “As it is a functioning market, the project will be built gradually so as not to disrupt commercial activity,” Mr Mitrou explained.
The project concerns the regeneration of the Vlali market, specifically the area surrounded by Egnatia, Aristotelous, Ermou and Venizelou streets. As planned, the pedestrian streets of Menexe, Vlali, Solomou, Asklipiou, Chalkeon, Kydoniati, Spandoni, etc. will be upgraded, while at the same time there will be reconstruction of sidewalks and roads with light traffic, tree planting and use of smart city applications.
The project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) – Priority Axis “Entrepreneurship Development with Sectoral Priorities” – of the EP. “Competitiveness Entrepreneurship and Innovation”.
As part of the construction of the project, EYATH is going to proceed with the replacement of the dirty and rain water drainage pipes with a new modern technology pipe, which will have the possibility of easy and immediate control.
