According to the correspondent of SKAI in Istanbul, Manolis Kostidis, there is a discussion in the Turkish newspapers about whether Ankara will launch a military operation against Greece.

The incendiary rhetoric of the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip, escalates the tension between Greece and Turkey, a fact that is reflected in the Turkish press for another day.

According to the SKAI correspondent in Istanbul, Manoli Kostidithe Turkish newspapers are discussing whether Ankara will launch a military operation against Greece.

The relevant article comes after yesterday – twice in the same day – Erdogan unleashed the well-known threats to attack Greece with the phrase “suddenly we may come at night”. It’s the fourth time he’s said that phrase in the past few days.

In fact, he repeated it last night in response to a journalist’s question. Referring to Greece he said that “patience has its limits, one night we may come suddenly.”

According to a Turkish analyst, two things differentiate the situation at the moment, the fact that Erdogan talks about islands under occupation and expresses a threat of attack against Greece.

Dominance challenge

Meanwhile, yesterday Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu sent a letter to 25 EU member states (excluding Greece and Cyprus), the Secretary General of NATO and the Secretary General of the UN, in which he states that Turkey wants a dialogue to resolve of the issues, however, raises the question of the sovereignty of islands and islets.

Specifically, in the electronic letters to the 25 EU countries, EU High Representative Josep Borrell, the Permanent Members of the United Nations Security Council (UN), Jens Stoltenberg and Antonio Guterres, Ankara’s positions on “the problems in Aegean”.

The text of the letter states that there are a number of closely related and interrelated problems in the Aegean, such as the width of territorial waters and national airspace, the delimitation of the continental shelf and territorial waters, the violation of the civilian status of the Eastern Aegean islands and that there are islands, islets and rocks, as well as service areas such as SAR, FIR and NAVTEX that do not belong to Greek sovereignty according to international treaties.

It is also reported that Turkey believes that the issues of the Aegean can be resolved within the framework of international law with the mutual recognition of the fundamental rights and legal interests of the two countries.

According to Anadolu, the Turkish minister states that Greece is the only country in the world whose airspace (10 miles) does not coincide with territorial waters (6 miles) and that this is not recognized by “any other country”.
