The ND MP was elected President of the Committee, following a proposal by the majority Giannis Kefalogiannis receiving 16 votes while 12 blank ballots were found in the ballot box. The ND MP was elected vice president Anna Mani-Papadimitriou with 16 votes and 2 blanks, while the co-candidate of PASOK-KINAL MP Dimitris Biagis received 10 votes and was not elected. The member of the National Democratic Party was elected Secretary of the Committee, Stathis Konstantinidisreceiving 16 votes and 3 blank ballots, while SYRIZA’s co-candidate, Sultana Eleftheriadou, collected 9 votes and was not elected.
In the vote for the election of the presidium, 28 members of the Committee voted, while the SYRIZA member of parliament was absent from the meeting and the vote. Angel Tolkas, accompanying the president of the main opposition party KO, Alexis Tsipras, on his visit to Veria.
According to information, before the vote, PASOK-KINAL requested the formation of a cross-party bureau, on the grounds that the initiative for the establishment of the Commission was PASOK-KINAL, but also because the decision of the Plenary on the formation of the Commission came in accordance with the revised provision of the Constitution that provides this possibility to the minority parties as well. The rapporteur of PASOK-KINAL, Evangelia Liagoulis, stated that these should also be reflected in the composition of the committee’s bureau and suggested that PASOK-KINAL MP Dimitris Biagis be appointed to the position of vice president, and a SYRIZA MP to the position of secretary. The proposal for the formation of an inter-party bureau was also supported by SYRIZA’s rapporteur Dimitris Tzanakopoulos, who agreed that PASOK-KINAL MP Dimitris Biagis should be the vice-president and proposed SYRIZA’s MP Sultana Eleftheriadou for the position of secretary. The minority opposition parties reportedly also agreed with the proposal to form an inter-party presidency.
The proposal to appoint an inter-party presidency was rejected by the majority MPs who argued that this would be unconstitutional as the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament provide that the formation of the Committees results from a vote. The inter-party presidency is not foreseen as something mandatory but this may arise after a vote as an expression of the House.
The work of the Committee continues with issues concerning the way the Committee operates and the planning of its work.
