Tsipras: Need to create a sustainable protection shield for households and businesses

by

The president of SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance accused the government of ideological obsessions not to intervene to regulate, to set limits and rules in the energy market.

“The biggest issue we have to deal with immediately is how to create a sustainable shield of protection for households and businesses from the energy crisis and inflation,” pointed out the president of SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance, Alexis Tsiprasduring the meeting he had with its producers and other stakeholders Thessaloniki.

As he said, in the last eight months Greece has had negative firsts throughout Europe.

He accused the government of ideological obsessions not to intervene to regulate, to set limits and rules in the energy market.

He added that if this is not addressed in the immediate future we will not be able to solve the equation.

“When PPC tends to cost more than 1/3 of a family’s income, then you realize that this cannot be dealt with,” he said, and continued: “The precision in consumer staples, in fuel, forms an explosive cocktail. It’s not a solution to subsidize the state from the public revenues which are increasing. So with one hand you take from the citizens and with the other hand you give to the citizens to keep the profiteering, the sky-high profits and the super profits of some oligopolies intact. This is not sustainable, in our estimation. The country cannot proceed with this productive model, it must make a shift to the knowledge economy and attempt a developmental leap.”

Mr. Tsipras criticized the New Democracy government and noted: “The country in the last three years did not take advantage of its potential to create a shield of protection in the middle class for the most vulnerable in order to be able to have a sustainable perspective, economic and productive .

The economic picture today is worse than it was a year ago when we met here again. Huge structural problems, domestic as well as foreign direct investment, are limited but also insignificant in terms of their quality characteristics.

We have huge and growing public and private debt, large and ever-growing trade deficits, now we also have spread clients, we are back to this agony.

Four years after the exit from the memorandums in 2018, we can see that the country continues to walk on an unstable path and the energy crisis has triggered a frightening inflationary crisis.”

As soon as he took the floor, the president of SYRIZA commented on the recent floods in Thessaloniki and after joking that he did not come to the meeting by speedboat, he remarked: “Thessaloniki, when it rains, literally and figuratively drowns, due to the absence of a strategy that could highlight the great advantages and possibilities of the city.

He accused Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of “abandoning” Thessaloniki and the city “has become an object of ridicule by the government of the N.D.”.

He also said that Thessaloniki is “completely absent” from the Recovery Fund.

The representatives of the agencies referred mainly to the problems for businesses, traders, professionals and households from the exorbitant increases in energy costs.

Special reference to the struggle of the workers in “Malamatina”, who are in the 8th week of the strike, by the president of the Thessaloniki Labor Center Haris Kyprianidis and the president of the union Giannis Frangidis.

The meeting was also attended by MPs Katerina Notopoulou, G. Amanatidis, Chr. Giannoulis, Al. Triantafyllidis, S. Famellos, Dora Avgeri, Kyriaki Malama.
