Tsiaras for electoral law: I do not understand the anxiety that can be expressed, behind a possible such discussion

“Do we really not understand that the final judge is not us, but the Greek citizens?”, said, among others, the Minister of Justice, Costas Tsiaras, closing the discussion of the bill regulating the conditions for the sale of digital products.

“Greek citizens are the ones who at the end of the day will judge both the government and the opposition parties, depending on their proposals and positions. The government will be judged on its work and its own result, and the opposition parties for their stability, their continuity, the seriousness of their views. And I think that is what one should stay at. Only in this way, and by always sending the message to the citizens, will we mainly be able to regain the trust of the citizens. And I’m talking about the parties and the political system. Because this should have been the biggest bet of this era,” emphasized the Minister of Justice, Costas Tsiaras, closing the discussion of the bill that regulates the conditions for the sale of digital products.

Responding to the reports of the parliamentary representatives regarding the electoral law, Mr. Tsiaras said: “I don’t really understand the anxiety that can be expressed, behind a possible such discussion. I don’t think that such a discussion exists, but hypothetically let it be a eventual debate. Do we really not understand that the final judge is not us, but the Greek citizens? Do we not understand that the outcome of policies is not judged by what is done in the debate within the Greek Parliament, but is judged by the outcome these policies bring in society and citizens and the final judge is the citizens? We have confidence in Greek society and we have confidence in Greek citizens”.

“We appreciate that this effort made in the last three years in order for our country to overcome the indescribable difficulties that were created, mainly due to, I would say, pan-European and global circumstances, but also to regain its role and its place in the European and a global phenomenon, something that we really had many years to see, are developments that Greek citizens see, understand and of course applaud,” he stressed. As he added, “we are in a period of challenges. We know very well that the challenges facing the country are many. And they are not only challenges that may be created internally, through problems or pathogens that come from the past, but they are challenges and problems that come from outside Greece, such as the energy crisis and the more general, I would say, crisis that exists in Greek-Turkish in the last period of time, but much more the general and global situation that concerns the world economy. All these are issues that one must to see them, both seriously and with responsibility, if he really wants to keep his role towards the Greek citizens, and in this way creating a real, if you like, proposal, which the Greek citizens are always in a position to judge “.

Referring to the bill for the “Incorporation of Directive (EU) 2019/770 of the European Parliament and of the Council, of 20 May 2019, on certain aspects concerning contracts for the supply of digital content and digital services (L 136), as well as of Directive (EU) 2019/771 of the European Parliament and of the Council, of 20 May 2019, regarding certain aspects concerning contracts for the sale of goods, amending Regulation (EU) 2017/2394 and Directive 2009/22/ EC, and the repeal of Directive 1999/44/EC (L 136)”, which was voted on principle with a wide majority (ND, PASOK) spoke of legislation which now provides strong legal certainty, but also a minimum of protection , both to consumers, as well as to professionals and small and medium-sized businesses, who are particularly interested in the Greek economic environment. And as the Minister of Justice pointed out, this regulates the conditions under which digital products will be sold and at the same time covers buyers in cases where they do not meet their reasonable expectations. SYRIZA voted “present” on the principle of the bill and KKE, Hellenic Solution and MeRA25 voted against.
