Androulakis to watch: From the first moment the government tried to downplay my complaint

“They don’t want the truth to be heard,” continues Mr. Androulakis and brings back four questions to the government.

The president of PASOK, Nikos Androulakis, launched a fierce attack against the government and the prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in a written statement, arguing that from the first moment “the government and its friendly media tried to downplay and ridicule my complaint”.

“They don’t want the truth to be heard,” continues Mr. Androulakis and brings back four questions to the government.

The entire written statement of Mr. Androulakis:

“Today, the European Parliament’s Committee of Inquiry into the use of surveillance software is holding a public hearing on illegal surveillance in Greece.

However, the European People’s Party, in collaboration with the Greens, have decided not to invite me, despite the fact that I am the only MEP so far to have been found to have had their mobile phone hacked with the illegal Predator spyware, while as it was revealed at the same time I was also being monitored by my country’s National Intelligence Service.

They don’t want the truth to be heard.

After all, that’s what they’ve been trying to do since the very beginning. Immediately after filing the complaint with the Prosecutor of the Supreme Court regarding the attempt to trap my cell phone with the Predator, the government and its friendly media tried to downplay and ridicule my complaint.

A few days later the Ministers of State Mr. G. Gerapetritis and of Digital Governance Mr. Pierrakakis, together with the then Governor of the EYP, Mr. P. Kontoleon, were found trying to mislead the Greek Parliament.

But thanks to an investigation by the Communications Privacy Authority (CPA), on August 5 it was revealed that my own country’s secret services had been monitoring me for “national security reasons” from September 2021 until mid-December 2021.

The period coincides perfectly with the attempt to trap my mobile (September 21) but also with the pre-election period for the leadership of PASOK – Movement for Change, in which I was elected President on December 12, 2021. My tracking was terminated only a few days later.

This revelation led to the resignation of the General Secretary of the Prime Minister, who is also his nephew, and the Commander of the EYP.

The Prime Minister, who one of his first moves after the election was to transfer responsibility for intelligence to the Office of the Prime Minister and change the formal qualifications to appoint his chosen one to the post of Commander, claimed he was unaware.

He even called my surveillance “legal but politically incorrect”, which he would not have allowed if he had been asked.

Regarding the legality of monitoring, all Constitutionalists, with public articles, have argued that the monitoring of an MEP is illegal and unconstitutional, underlining the essential difference between what is legal and what is legal.

The government, in its attempt to justify the unjustified, made unacceptable leaks that also involved third countries. But they were denied in the most categorical way by their diplomatic authorities, dragging the country internationally.

Even today the prime minister and the government refuse to say publicly the reason for my surveillance, citing reasons of national security.

They did the same in front of Parliament, where the culprits put forward reasons of secrecy, putting themselves and the country’s secret services above parliamentary and democratic control.

I will persevere to the end in revealing the truth and I will not allow shadows on a course of dignity. I have made it clear from the outset that my tracking case is not a personal matter. It is a question of democracy and the protection of institutions. For this, abundant light must fall.

The government must publicly answer the following questions:

  • Why while for 8 years as an MEP I was not a national danger, I suddenly became as soon as I nominated for the presidency of PASOK and ceased to be with my election?
  • What is the reason for my tracking?
  • Are other politicians and journalists being monitored?
  • Who owns and on whose behalf is he using the multi-million-euro Predator spy ‘superplane’, which can videotape a person’s life through their mobile phone 24 hours a day?”
