The Serbian Foreign Minister emphasized that escalation in the Eastern Mediterranean should be avoided and that International Law and the Resolutions of the UN Security Council should be respected

The Minister of Foreign Affairs had a meeting with his Serbian counterpart Nikola Selaković in Belgrade Nikos Dendias. At the center of their discussions were energy cooperation, the Western Balkans and the situation in Eastern Mediterranean.

The meeting emphasized the excellent level of bilateral relations and in this context it was agreed to have a new meeting between the two ministers before the end of the year.

Bilateral economic cooperation was discussed and the Foreign Minister underlined the importance of Greek investments in Serbia, which have created 25,000 jobs.

In the field of energy, extensive reference was made to the need to diversify its sources.

Special mention was made of the TAP and IGB pipelines (to which Serbia will also be connected), as well as the FSRU floating station in Alexandroupolis.

It was also agreed to organize as soon as possible tripartite meetings of the Foreign Ministers of Greece and Serbia, together with Cyprus (the last meeting took place in April 2021), as well as with North Macedonia.

Much of the discussion focused on developments in the Western Balkans.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs reiterated Greece’s firm support for the European perspective of the Western Balkans, which is the only way to consolidate security and stability in the region.

He even expressed particular concern about the influence of revisionist forces, which, making use of historical, economic and religious ties, are trying to penetrate the region.

He also expressed his satisfaction with the recent agreement in the context of the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue.

The Foreign Minister also informed his Serbian counterpart about the escalation of Turkish provocative rhetoric.

The Serbian Foreign Minister emphasized that escalation in the Eastern Mediterranean should be avoided and that International Law and the Resolutions of the UN Security Council should be respected.

Finally, both sides underlined their commitment to the territorial integrity of all countries.
