The Minister of Foreign Affairs stated that he is not calm at all and noted that after the Turkish-Libyan memorandum the Turkish leadership made choices that leave no scope for negotiation
The doctrine of Constantinos Karamanlis, which remained the goal of the defense foreign policy, was the ratio (of strengthening each country with American weapons) “seven to ten” in favor of Turkey. Now, this has not only been reversed in Greece’s favor, but it’s ten to zero pointed out on Thursday Nikos Dendias speaking with parliamentary editors ahead of the debate in Parliament, and the vote in principle, of the bills to ratify the protocol of accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO.
For the escalation of Turkish rhetoric
What is very sad and in terms of substance, is that the issue of islands was never raised. Unfortunately, if there is something bad, it is that Turkey and the Turkish public opinion are trapped.
As Mr. Dendias pointed out, from the Turkish-Libyan memorandum onwards he has made choices (the Turkish leadership) that leave no room for compromise
The Secretary of State stated that he is not quiet at all. On the other hand, he clarified, a constant level of international reaction has been created.
He accused Ankara of having trapped Greek-Turkish relations, even though the government has given unlimited opportunities to the other side since 2019. And it traps, he continued, in a continuous course of conflict with Egypt (s.s. because there is the security protocol that imposes a Turkish military presence in Libya).
In this context, the minister wondered why someone in Turkey who is far-sighted would choose this strategy, as it leads to dead ends and dangerous roads.
What happened after the Mitsotakis-Erdogan meeting in Bosphorus
Mr. Dendias clarified that he had been strongly in favor of this meeting between the prime minister and the Turkish president. As he noted, he believed that for there to be an opening it would not have to be from the bottom up.
The picture he got, the minister said, was that (the meeting) had gone extremely well. What happened from Turkey’s side (s.s. after the meeting) he stated, is completely impossible for him to trace. It doesn’t change the fact that it’s an ongoing deterioration, he noted.
As he said, let it be considered no good that the elections in Greece and Turkey coincide.
