Special mention was made of Turkey’s attitude towards the Greek minority
The reports of the EU’s special representative, Eamon Gilmore, to the UN General Assembly regarding Turkey’s attitude towards the Greek minority and respect for human rights were a strong blow to Ankara.
The references were made on the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities (the anniversary is on December 18).
Eamon Gilmore, regarding the Greek minority, said:
“The EU deeply regrets the past discriminatory policies implemented by Turkey, which resulted in the Greek minority being on the verge of extinction today.
In this context, the EU reiterates its call on Turkey to protect human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law, including the property rights of persons belonging to minorities and minority legal entities.”
