“We will not have a blackout, but we will have a lot of financial pressure due to the high cost of energy for all Europeans, which Mr. Putin is causing with his decisions,” he said, however.
Greece has prepared and will not face a blackout in the winter, pointed out the Minister of Development & Investments, Adonis Georgiadis speaking today at the “European Economic Conference” of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in Berlin.
“We are proceeding very quickly with the necessary investments. For example, we had an LNG station in Revythoussa and now we are building a second one to double the quantities of LNG we import from various countries and we are rapidly installing an FSRU station in Alexandroupolis – I believe it will be ready next summer – so that we can also cover the domestic and the needs of neighboring countries, such as Bulgaria. In addition, we operate the lignite energy production units and in general have taken the necessary measures so that there is no sufficiency problem in the energy sector“, the minister emphasized.
He added, however, that there is the issue of high energy prices. “We won’t have a blackout, but we will have a lot of financial pressure due to the high cost of energy for all Europeans, which Mr. Putin is causing with his decisions“, he said and was in favor of imposing a ceiling on the price of natural gas.
“Europe is a huge market. If we impose the cap, the market will adjust because nobody can afford to lose the European market. We must move quickly to impose a cap because we cannot leave European consumers unprotected in Russia’s attack on the world and the European Union in particular“, he underlined.
Present at the conference was Klaus Regling, who represents, as Mr. Georgiadis said while expressing his thanks, the largest lender in Greece. “Greece is currently in an extremely good economic situation. In 2021 it achieved one of the highest growth rates in the EU at 8.3%, while in the first half of 2022 the growth rate is also very high at 7.8%, higher than initial forecasts. I believe that in the whole of 2022 we will have growth of over 5%, maybe even 6% as the path of investments, exports and tourism is better than ever. Greece would not have achieved these performances if we had not stayed in the Eurozone and if we had not been supported by the Europeans when we should have been”concluded the minister.
