Turkey, deeply disturbed by the EU’s strong reaction, goes so far as to declare that the “Union supports Greece’s maximalist positions in the Eastern Mediterranean”.

The “finger at the European Union” is pointed defiantly with the announcement of the Ankara defending the illegal “Turkish-Libyan memorandum”.

As reported by the correspondent of SKAI in Istanbul Manolis KostidisTurkey, deeply disturbed by the EU’s strong reaction, goes so far as to declare that “the Union supports Greece’s maximalist positions in the Eastern Mediterranean”.

“Greece has maximalist positions in the Eastern Mediterranean and is trying to encroach on the rights of Libya. This cannot hinder Turkish-Libyan rapprochement efforts. And the EU supports the maximalist positions of Greece which avoids dialogue. What the EU is doing and its reaction is against the European authorities. The EU should not make comments on agreements concerning third countries, it is not a judicial body,” states the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

The announcement of the Turkish Foreign Ministry in detail

“The Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Tanju Bilgic responds to a question about the statements of the EU and Greece regarding the Memorandum of Understanding between Turkey and Libya on cooperation in the field of hydrocarbons

“For our country, the statements of the Press Representative of Greece and the EU regarding the Memorandum of Understanding signed yesterday (October 3) between Turkey and the Libyan Government of National Unity, which provides for the development of a bilateral scientific, technical, technological, legal, administrative and commercial cooperation on land and sea in the field of hydrocarbons.

“Objection to this cooperation agreement between two sovereign states is against both international law and the basic principles of the UN.

“The efforts of Greece, which is trying to usurp the legal rights not only of our country, but also of Libya, with its maximalist claims of maritime jurisdiction and the licensing areas it has published in this context, will not yield any results.

“The EU’s support for the maximalist demands of Greece, which with its attitude of avoiding honest dialogue and obstructing international judicial remedies, is contrary to both its own acquis and international law. The EU is not an international judicial body for comment on or adjudicate agreements between sovereign third countries.

“Therefore, we call on both the EU and EU member states not to overstep their borders and powers and to respect the sovereignty and equality of states in accordance with international law and UN principles.”
