Sakellaropoulou: The war in Ukraine creates a disturbing precedent for any revisionist ambition

The European response to the COVID pandemic, which contributed to mitigating its health and economic consequences, must be an example for every emergency, the President of the Republic emphasized

The effects of the war in Ukraine were discussed, among other things, during the 17th Informal Meeting of the Heads of State of the Arraiolos Group, which this year takes place in Valletta and in which the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou participates.

On the occasion of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Mrs. Sakellaropoulou emphasized that it “creates a disturbing precedent for any revisionist ambition around the world, which despises international law and the principle of good neighborliness.”

“The determination and sense of urgency that characterized the European response to the COVID pandemic and contributed to mitigating its health and economic consequences, must be an example for every emergency,” added the President of the Republic during her speech

The statements of Mrs. Sakellaropoulou in detail during the joint press conference of the Presidents:

“Dear Presidents, dear friends,
Ladies and gentlemen,

First of all, I would like to congratulate our host, President Vella, for the excellent organization of the Arraiolos Group meeting and thank him for his warm hospitality in Valletta.

This year’s work of the group was particularly important in view of the critical current challenges and the steps we need to take to manage them.

We discussed a number of pressing issues: the tragic ongoing war in Ukraine, as a result of the Russian invasion, its effects in various areas, such as the huge humanitarian crisis, energy shortages and the sharp increase in the cost of living for our citizens, immigration flows and food shortages.

We also referred to the more general risks posed by this military invasion to stability and security in Europe. It sets a worrying precedent for any revisionist ambitions around the world that flout international law and the principle of good neighbourliness.

At the same time, climate change cannot be ignored and must be tackled urgently if we wish to bequeath a safer planet to future generations.

The determination and sense of urgency that characterized the European response to the COVID pandemic and helped mitigate its health and economic consequences should set an example for any emergency. Showing the same resilience and solidarity, we must strive anew to maintain social cohesion, inspired by the ideal of social justice, and actively seek to eliminate inequalities.

In conclusion, I would like to thank, once again, President Vella for the opportunity he gave us to highlight our joint effort regarding the multifaceted challenges that our countries and our European family are facing.”
