Lionel Messi says Qatar Cup will be the last of his career

by

Lionel Messi has confirmed that the World Cup in Qatar will be the last of his career. The Argentine striker, elected the best on the planet seven times, will arrive at the tournament at the age of 35.

“Certainly, yes,” he said, when asked if the World Cup scheduled to start in November will be his farewell.

He gave the statement to ESPN Argentina’s “En primera persona” (in first person, in Spanish) talk show. The statement was given to the narrator and presenter Sebastian Vignolo, one of the journalists with whom Messi has the best relationship. It was for whom shirt 10 gave his only interview during the tournament in Russia, four years ago.

That means this will be your last chance to be world champion. It will be the fifth Cup for Messi, who came close to winning in 2014, when Argentina was defeated by Germany at the Maracanã.

The last experience was traumatic. With a cast full of problems and rumors about problems in his personal life, the striker had a poor performance and his team fell in the round of 16 against France.

“I’m counting down the days to the Worlds. There’s a bit of anxiety and nervousness at the same time. I wish it was now and the nervousness is like we’re already there, about what’s going to happen. It’s the last one. I can’t wait for it to arrive and on the other hand, there is the fear of wanting everything to go well”, he explained.

Argentina will arrive in Qatar in good form. The team has been undefeated for 35 games and won last year’s Copa America, defeating Brazil in the final at Maracanã. It was the first title for the first team won by Messi.

“We are in a good moment because of the way things happened. We have a very well-armed, very strong group. In a World Cup, anything can happen. All matches are very difficult. That’s why the World Cup is so difficult and special, not always the favorites are the ones that end up winning or taking the expected path”, he added.

Argentina is in group C, alongside Saudi Arabia (its debut rival, on November 22), Mexico (November 26) and Poland (November 30).
