While the Turkish economy sinking into triple-digit – actually – inflation and all the Turkish citizens who see their income disappearing and are now deprived of even the basics are sinking with it, Tayyip Erdogan he insists on dreaming of empires and greatness, reviving his neo-Ottoman vision at every opportunity. A desperate attempt, as experts and analysts comment, in order to contain his polling descent, which seems to deprive him of the government in the next elections. A perspective that can push Tayyip Erdogan to extremes while part of this extreme policy has already begun to unfold against our country.

And while the “cheese” for Turkey’s nationalist audience may be Erdogan’s taxis to Greece, to his international audience, to his allies in NATO and in general to the west and to the partners of Greece, he tries repeatedly, albeit ineffectively, to turn white into black.

After failed attempt to distort reality in Prague, the Turkish president a few twenty-four hours later continues the same nonsense. Speaking to the Council of Ministers of Turkey, he came back with new lies, trying to present his “boss” as the peacemaker of the Eastern Mediterranean and open to a dialogue that he ended beyond any diplomatic rules and protocols, with inflammatory statements and of course with the infamous ” Mitsotakis yoke”. Nevertheless, speaking to his Ministers, he claimed that “in Prague that he wanted to solve the problems of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean within the framework of international law and noted: “We expect the EU to invite our interlocutors to a dialogue, on a bilateral basis, instead of supporting unjust and illegal initiatives in this matter”.

In fact, he did not fail to attack Greece once again, speaking of “hostile attitudes that are being demonstrated against our country, especially with leverage on Greece”! At the time when he himself sent an entire ministerial body to Libya to follow up on the illegal Turkish-Libyan memorandum and to agree on research for hydrocarbons. “With the agreement on hydrocarbons that we made with Libya, a new field of cooperation was created in the extraction of oil and its derivatives, within the continental shelf of this country (Libya)” Erdogan said at the Cabinet meeting. A non-existent and illegal agreement which he continues to “sell” to his domestic audience, despite the international outcry and condemnation which has now extended to the Turkish opposition itself.

Amdurrahman Bilgtiscoordinator of Foreign Affairs and Security Policies of the DEVA party (Babajan), he directly questioned both the Turkish-Libyan memorandum and the new agreement with the interim government of Libya, drawing attention to the Greece-Egypt agreement in 2020 that interrupted the Turkish plans. Amdurrahman Bilgtis even stated that the Turkish government claims that the content of the agreement was also ratified by the UN, while this is not the case. “Here we are talking about an agreement between the two countries” he said and added “with the new agreement we say that we will extract gas and oil on the coasts off the coast of Libya, in the areas of maritime areas of responsibility. Fine, let’s do it. But Greece and Egypt have signed an agreement defining maritime areas of responsibility and, as we know, points where the two agreements overlap. And if you continue the work, it means that you are saying that you do not recognize the agreement of others. And the foreign minister told us: who cares what we care about. This style has a problem,” said the representative of the Turkish opposition.

Another slap from the Commission

In this environment and before the “alector sang three” of Erdoğan’s big mouths about his alleged success in Prague, the Commission came with a new complaint against the Turkish President and in the draft report on the enlargement of the Union he speaks, according to information, of “no step” on the part of Ankara and emphasizes that Turkey must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the member states and commit to good neighborly relations. That is, it recalls the conclusions of the March 2021 Summit.

According to the same information, it is also emphasized that Turkey must respect international law and calls for a de-escalation of tensions in the interest of regional stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Special mention and highlighting is also made again of the serious problems observed in democratic institutions and the deterioration of human and fundamental rights.
