THE economy always wins on the way to the polls. Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Alexis Tsipras they left no room for doubt as to what will be the dominant issue in the next period and clarified the direction they will follow until the elections. The debate in the Parliament, on the occasion of the official opposition leader’s question about the accuracy, did not deviate at all from its goal. Not even for the surveillance case where the Commission of Inquiry completed its work on Thursday. Alexis Tsipras only made a reference, the prime minister did not lift the gauntlet and the leader of the official opposition did not return to his deputation, as the “hand of the clock” pointed to the accuracy.

The daily battle is tough for both New Democracy and SYRIZA they have two very difficult and completely different missions. The ruling faction to exhaust all the fiscal margins it has in order to support the middle class and vulnerable social groups and the official opposition to present a convincing and realistic alternative proposal.

Neither is easy in the special condition of the war in Ukraine and at the moment when the “sand in the hourglass” is empty. Kyriakos Mitsotakis wants to lead his party to the polls while maintaining the margin of safety of 7-8 points that the opinion polls have given him so far. The immediate response to the topical question posed to him by Alexis Tsipras is no accident. In the blue camp they knew well that SYRIZA, in the event of a delay, would try to show that the prime minister is afraid to confront the economy. Alexis Tsipras wants to change the critical indicator of the “victory performance” which does not give him, until now, a prospect of victory. This is why he constantly repeats that his party will win the elections whenever they are held. In the debate in the Parliament, he again asked for the appeal to the polls, with Kyriakos Mitsotakis repeating that he will use up the four-year term.

With heating oil to already start being available from 1.32-1.40 euros/liter could not be missing from the prime minister’s speech a window for a new market intervention which mainly concerns professionals. “Let’s discuss realistic solutions to deal with the problem. You are right that diesel increases have an impact on the supply chain. We are measuring our capabilities and we will see if we can announce something for the diesel engine as well,” he said. In a pre-election landscape the government does not exhaust all its weapons. Small benefits per category and per social group will be announced as responses to the criticism of the entire opposition. And it is certain that the front from the parliamentary parties will be formed in the winter, regardless if it does not progress to something more. Alexis Tsipras, in his two interventions, acted with a double strategy. Firstly, he accused the prime minister that the price increases in the market have his name and secondly, he addressed the audience that is closest to New Democracy: the pensioners. “Do you have the audacity to talk about the pensioners from whom you have taken five billion, three that you cut the 13th pension and another 2.4 the retroactive ones that you do not give and you have the audacity to order increases that SYRIZA voted for?”, he said characteristically.

The super profits of the energy companies, PPC, the “household” basket, the rise in lending rates and taxation were the “menu” of a debate that could also be the dress rehearsal of the budget vote.
