The government representative underlined that the ND, the party founded in 1974 by Konstantinos Karamanlis, as a vehicle for expressing the conservative and liberal faction in Greece, is the longest-running party in power in modern Greek history and the strongest center-right party in Europe.
“The prime minister and New Democracy are and will be again the guarantors of self-reliant Greece even after the next elections”, stressed Yiannis Oikonomou in his speech at the meeting of the presidents of the DEEP and NODE of the ND.
The government representative underlined that the ND, the party founded in 1974 by Konstantinos Karamanlis, as a vehicle for expressing the conservative and liberal faction in Greece, is the longest-running party in power in modern Greek history and the strongest center-right party in Europe.
“The Russian invasion of Ukraine and the election results in France, Italy, Sweden and a number of other countries show that the great political battles and high stakes of the 21st century are ideological and value driven. The Western world is relentlessly fighting Russian despotism and revisionism, even though the effects on our quality of life are painful. This struggle can be justified and legitimized in the popular consciousness only on an ideological and value basis”, underlined Mr. Economou, noting that only parties with principles and values can respond to the modern political situation, because only they can justify convincingly to the people their policies, to inspire citizens and get them on board.
“New Democracy, as a party with historical and value depth, maintains its leading role and in recent years under the leadership of Kyriakos Mitsotakis has increased its electoral and social impact. It is a party that takes care of the people by safeguarding the homeland and the nation. At the same time, our adherence to liberal ideals ensures that populism does not descend to the level of cheap populism and that the individual is not leveled by the whole,” he added.
The government representative said that for the last fifty years or so, New Democracy has been a party of stability, consistency and continuity. “A party on which the citizen can rely. A party committed to Democracy, liberalism, the defense of the homeland and national rights, a party that respects the principles, values, traditions and history of Hellenism, a party with a European orientation, a popular party whose policies have as the sole guiding principle is the authentic popular interest. And at the same time a party that can and does open up to new currents, to new people, that can assimilate and utilize responsible people and creative minds. A party that can constantly expand, evolve. Beware, however, it expands without mutating, it evolves without changing. And the reason why this happens is described by a single important Greek word. This word is perhaps the only prerequisite. It is the word respect. Respect for our history, respect for our people, respect for our organization,” he said.
At the same time, he said that all the other Greek parties are on the move. “We see today that the parties of the Left do not deal with the real popular problems and that their agenda has no contact with reality. We also see parties that want to be called right-wing competing in anti-Europeanism and supporting international authoritarianism or even fascism. Greece has an opposition inferior to its institutional role, international requirements and technological developments. A technophobic, ideological, irresponsible opposition. An opposition that does not add, but constantly takes away from the country and society. An opposition that surrounds its political desperation and tries to use as a vehicle not just every crisis, but even horrible and heinous crimes to gain electoral benefits”, he pointed out.
Mr. Economou also said that the government successfully faced the crises it was called upon to manage with pragmatism, expertise and professionalism.
“The crises found us at the end of a difficult course. Greece, during the decade of the memorandums, lagged behind international developments. At the same time, the international crises, already from 2020, make it difficult to restore the imbalance that has been created in the decade 2010-2019. The government is trying to cover the gap that was created and the many and rapid changes sometimes cause reactions and insecurity in several layers of society. The truth is that crisis management could not be without losses and repercussions. But, in general and given the international situation, it should be considered a success, as the social fabric was not ruptured, the stability of the country and the integrity of the Motherland were not shaken, and huge irreparable wounds were not created in society”, he underlined.
And he emphasized: “The successive crises we managed were capable of creating conditions of national tragedy in a state with the dynamics and characteristics of Greece that we received from SYRIZA in 2019. Of course, we should not underestimate that there is justified and expected fatigue in Greek society from the memoranda, the pandemic and the accuracy caused by the war. Our endurance is low. But, we should not easily forget that things could be much worse. Because the right thing is done in only one way, while the wrong thing is done in infinite ways. Our people experienced bitterly and burdensomely in 2015, when they understood that the disaster can come at the next moment as a result of populism and amateurism”.
The government spokesman further said that the Government’s main concern is the people living below the tolerable standard of living and the middle class.
“We have a political plan to fairly share the wealth, which with our policies we are already creating and will create, and to help people withstand the effects of successive crises. An effective and quality social protection net can only be established if it creates wealth”, he emphasized.
He further stated that the government upholds Justice as a pillar of Democracy, strengthens national defence, shields our national borders and successfully handles the great challenge of immigration, drastically reduces unemployment, increases the basic wage and provides a huge package to relieve the consequences of precision crises, strengthens the NHS at an unprecedented level and supports health workers in the long-term and laborious fight against the pandemic, fights like no other in Europe against the wave of precision in goods and energy, modernizes and digitizes the state, fights domestic violence , listens to the needs of the youth and facilitates them in finding new quality jobs.
“A government that defends the motherland against its sycophants, who have reached the point of wanting to present Greece, in matters of freedom of the press and the rule of law, in a worse place than African dictatorships. This government, led by the prime minister, does not leave any challenge unanswered, both politically and in the field. We continue our struggle with dedication, modesty and respect for the citizen, correcting our weaknesses and our mistakes, which are inevitable for anyone who acts and attempts to change things. Citizens are invited to choose which Greece they want. The main criterion is policies, not ideologies. Do we want investment and new jobs or subsidized impoverishment policies? Lower or higher taxes? Digital or bureaucratic and outdated public? Strong or disorganized YOU? Open borders or strict immigration policy? Strengthening of the armed forces and security forces or cultural nihilism? Relations of mutual cooperation with the superpowers of the planet or naive wanderings in the third world? Universities of quality or sanctuaries of iniquity? Unrelenting national politics or winking at revisionism?” he continued.
Mr. Economou said that dividing lines go beyond traditional dipoles, which do not correspond to the new reality.
“The new world demands inventive and courageous solutions. The great crises and structural rearrangements of the 21st century create terrible shocks. The degradation of citizens’ quality of life, immigration, the crisis of democracy, etc. they cannot be dealt with by the post-political logic of party-enterprises and opportunistic political formations of indignation, protest and reaction. Also, the problems are not overcome by adding political deadlocks. In a dangerously turbulent world, parties with solid foundations in history and society are needed. Parties like New Democracy. They need leaders with structure, knowledge and a deep sense of their mission. They need leaders like Kyriakos Mitsotakis”, he stressed.
