According to the Minister of State, Akis Schertsos, there is a need to give incentives to the owners of closed and old houses
Tomorrow, Wednesday is put in public consultation the Save – Renovate program, which mainly concerns closed properties. This was made known by the Minister of State, Akis Skertsos, in his intervention in the context of the 23rd Prodexpo, held at the Athens Concert Hall. The program is part of the government’s wider planning for housing young people and will provide subsidies for energy upgrades and home renovations.
In particular, the Minister of State pointed out that in the last three years the real estate market and the construction industry have taken the lead, with the help of the government’s measures, but the recovery has not yet covered the wounds left behind by the crisis, he added.
“There is a need for the new generation to rent houses at reasonable prices compared to their incomes. To achieve this, we have a multi-layered policy regarding affordable housing”, explained Akis Skertsos, highlighting the need to give incentives to the owners of closed and old houses. “About 85% of real estate in the country is over 20 years old. There is a large stock of closed and old houses and the owners must be given incentives to open them”, he stressed.
Beyond the Save – Renovate program, the government’s multi-level strategy for affordable housing also includes social compensation, with the aim of holistically utilizing public property owned by Municipalities, Ministries and other organizations.
“The tool, I believe, will work over time and provide affordable housing. With social compensation we are creating a new market”, he said and even invited foreign investors “to participate and take advantage of the new institutional framework. We are very interested in the repopulation of the center of Athens, we cannot let it be deserted”, he emphasized in closing.
