In his post on Facebook, the president of SYRIZA states: “This small people resisted and defeated Mussolini’s fascist violence. He resisted the criminal brutality of Hitler’s Nazism.”
With the lyrics of Yannis Ritsos “a small people and fighting without swords and bullets for the bread, light and song of the whole world” the president of SYRIZA, Alexis Tsipras, addresses a message for the anniversary of October 28.
In his post on Facebook, the president of SYRIZA states: “This small people resisted and defeated Mussolini’s fascist violence. He resisted the criminal brutality of Hitler’s Nazism.
He stood up hungry and barefoot in the violence of fascism and Nazism, in the saga of national resistance. And immediately after with EAM, ELAS, EPON, all resistance organizations.
We are proud to belong to this people. Children and grandchildren of ordinary people who did not hesitate to give their lives for our country to be free.
And we continue this struggle today in other circumstances. In a time of war, fluidity and threats. We support peace, but we are united in the face of Turkish threats and we are not taking a single step back from our sovereign rights.
We are fighting for a free, safe, strong country with the strength of its values and people.
A Greece that gives freedom its meaning by ensuring for all its citizens, without discrimination, equal opportunities in work, education, the material and spiritual goods of development.
A Greece where its citizens will feel and be safe against external threats.
A state that will protect the many and not discriminate in favor of the few.
A democracy open to progress and closed to regime practices and repressive logics.
A society of solidarity and resistance against those nostalgic for Nazism, the abuse of the rule of law, the undermining of democratic rights, the authoritarianism of those who behave like owners of the country.
A homeland of Europe and the world.
History has shown that freedom is not a given. It is half without democracy and justice everywhere. It requires constant vigilance, resistance, unity and struggle.
With this struggle, for these ideals, we honor today the 28th of October.
We do not forget those who fought and gave their lives. And above all, we don’t forget WHY they fought.
Happy birthday to all Greek men and women!”.
