The President of PASOK-Movement of Change argues that the providers arbitrarily determine the retail prices, based on their commercial policy and not on the basis of costs

PASOK-Movement for Change makes the issues of the economy and everyday life of the citizen the spearhead.

In his article for the newspaper TA NEA, Nikos Androulakis describes a model of fair response to the energy crisis and deconstructs the customer perception in favor of the excess profits of large companies on which the government’s subsidy model is based.

“While in September the wholesale price hovered around €420/MWh, the third most expensive in Europe, provider prices without subsidies were close to €800/MWh, with PPC setting the tone for high tariffs. This difference between the cost and the sale price brought in just one month a profit of 500 million euros”, says Mr. Androulakis.

The President of PASOK-Movement of Change argues by proving that the providers arbitrarily determine the retail prices, based on their commercial policy and not on the basis of costs, with the state subsidizing the tariffs with huge amounts in order to hold down the prices somewhat.

“Subsidies in the three months of implementation of the system to date, reach 4.1 billion euros, of which 1.7 billion are directly from the state budget, and a large percentage of money from Funds that aimed to finance the just transition of the lignite areas and investments in the electricity network. But because of the government’s policy, they are given to energy companies,” explained Mr. Androulakis.

PASOK-Movement for Change has advocated a graduated and not horizontal ceiling in retail, so that the most vulnerable citizens and businesses are protected. This measure, transparent and without mediation, has been included in the European Commission’s toolbox since February and fairly distributes the costs between the state, producers and consumers, without creating excess profits for a few at the expense of the many. In addition, PASOK-Movement for Change has requested the taxation of surplus profits, in addition to electricity producers, to providers but also to fossil fuel trading, refining and transportation companies, such as refineries and natural gas traders.

“There is a reliable alternative to the Government’s costly and unfair policies based on fiscal populism with a view to the next national elections,” concludes Mr. Androulakis.
