Kyiv mayor’s desperate plea: Send blankets and generators or we’ll freeze

“Ukrainians will freeze to death this winter if the West does not urgently send blankets and generators to keep them warm,” Klitschko said.

The mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, addressed a dramatic appeal to the West for basic necessities due to the crisis that has already reached Ukraine through the British newspaper The Telegraph.

“Ukrainians will freeze to death this winter if the West does not urgently send blankets and generators to keep them warm,” Klitschko said.

The 51-year-old mayor of Kyiv and former world heavyweight boxing champion said increasing Russian attacks on power plants had left his country on the brink of a new humanitarian crisis.

“We’re doing everything we can to save the lives of our people and protect them,” he said, pounding his huge fists on the table.

“But this winter will definitely be a huge challenge for us,” he added.

Moscow’s recent strikes on power plants and the wider grid cause major power outages and raise the pressing question of whether the system will survive the harsh winter months.

About 40% of Ukraine’s total energy infrastructure had been severely damaged by drone and missile attacks ordered by Sergei Surovykin, the Kremlin’s newest invasion commander.

In Kyiv, residents have been warned of a “sharp deterioration” in the region’s electricity supplies as a result of the strikes.

Klitschko said the change in strategy, a hallmark of Putin’s latest military commander, reflected the Russian president’s need to claim even a small victory from his faltering invasion.

In the coming days, nighttime temperatures across Ukraine are expected to drop, reaching -20 degrees Celsius in some areas.

With many Ukrainians living in war-torn buildings with no gas or windows, electricity is one of the only methods they have to heat their homes.

For Klitschko, Putin’s invasion is no longer a war on Ukraine’s armed forces, but a war on its civilians, which he is trying to use the winter to subdue.

Klitschko and his team managed to buy generators and have prepared 1,000 mobile spots for heating in Kyiv.

However, he admitted they are still preparing for a “worst case scenario” in their city as winter approaches.
