Nikos Androulakis: “Against two failed models of power, I contrast an institutional culture of governance”

The president of PASOK – Movement for Change spoke of a unique political tango between the government and the opposition

The widening of social inequalities and the collapse of citizens’ purchasing power due to increased inflation and energy costs were mentioned in an interview with “Kontra24” by the President of PASOK-Movement for Change, Nikos Androulakis.

“We proposed ceiling on retail. They didn’t adopt it and now if you look at the evidence, it shows why the government model is crooked. In September, the megawatt hour cost 400 euros on the energy exchange, we paid 800 euros for it. Now from 230 euros, it retails at 600 euros. So the model created by the Government of New Democracy is for the few energy producers and suppliers to make a profit.”

Referring to the household basket, the President of PASOK – Movement for Change commented: “We voted for it in good faith. We did not do the Pontius Pilates like SYRIZA, because we want to see how it will be implemented. Only private labels and products that were already on offer are included, anot to put pressure on the prices of other products’ adding that there is no provision for products of daily use that increase a family’s weekly expenses, such as baby diapers.

Mr. Androulakis pointed out with emphasis the increased private health and housing costs, which burden family budgets and underlined that “the banks received 40 billion from the European Central Bank and today, although they keep the interest rate on our deposits stable, they increase the interest rate on housing loans by 60 points. The gap between interest rates on deposits and mortgages is the largest in the Eurozone. These constitute speculation of the big and powerful, which this Government does not touch but also implements policies to further strengthen it”.

He even proposed to adopt a cheap monthly ticket in urban transport according to European standards.

Referring to the instrumentalization of immigration by the Turkish leadership, the President of PASOK-Movement of Change emphasized that “we must strengthen FRONTEX, so that we have less cost of guarding our borders as a country, but there are also European eyes watching the game that Erdogan is doing at our borders, because one cannot denounce Lukashenko for waging a hybrid war on immigration but not denounce Erdogan when he does the same.”

Reasons beyond any logic of international law characterized the provocative rhetoric of the Turkish leadership regarding the demilitarization of the Eastern Aegean islands, clarifying that a scenario of demilitarization of our islands cannot exist.

Against the backdrop of the presence of the European Parliament’s PEGA inquiry committee in Athens, Mr. Androulakis demonstrated the government’s attempt to cover up the wiretapping scandal and responded to the criticism of the SYRIZA-friendly media for his choice to file a memorandum. “Probably SYRIZA didn’t hear what I said, because it’s audacity to say that I didn’t go on purpose. I said that the Krikel company, which is involved, had a 1 million direct commission on the SYRIZA-ANEL government and then made another 8 million direct commission on New Democracy. We all know, and they also know in SYRIZA, that the Minister, who made this direct assignment, then put his son to work at Krikel”, stressed the President of PASOK – Movement for Change, calling on the official opposition to stop the conspiracies.

Yet, I wonderede about the ambiguities about the alleged reasons for his surveillance: “Who is the liar and who should be brought to justice? Mrs. Vlachou who says she did the right thing because there was a danger for the country, or the Prime Minister who claims that this whole story was a mistake and expels his close associate and nephew, as well as the commander of the EYP? They’re making fun of us here!”

Regarding recent reports, which revealed that the mobile phones of government ministers had been intercepted, as well as the public comments of the President of SYRIZA on this, Mr. Androulakis emphasized that “some who said “the end of wiretapping” are now raising the issue again, because the fire has reached close to their house. Because things have taken a different turn, we must find – and I am speaking in national terms but also in terms of the security of the political system – who operates the Predator in Greece and bring him to justice. One cannot use a multimillion-euro surveillance superweapon against businessmen and politicians and not have the government and the judiciary mobilize against them. Mr. Tsipras gave names of businessmen and Ministers of the New Democracy. Did someone call him? Is there a competent prosecutor in the country?’ concluded the President of PASOK – Movement for Change.

Asked about the post-election collaborations, Mr. Androulakis described a peculiar political tango between Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Alexis Tsipras.
“Against dfailed models of power, where on the one hand we had Mr. Pappa to be the one instead and then we had the other one instead, Mr. Dimitriadis, aI argue for an institutional culture of open government, with programmatic agreements, which since it is happening all over Europe, why should it not finally happen in Greece. Mr. Tsipras, voted for the simple proportional vote and from the stage of the TIF said that he will not form a government of the defeated. Why did he vote for simple analog? If he didn’t want simple proportionality, let him leave the bonus, a system with which you cannot become a government of the losers, because only the first party gets the bonus. So here it looks like a game of two people who are only interested in either one staying in the prime minister’s chair or the other winning it again”.
