by

The director of the Vascular Surgery Clinic of the AHEPA hospital Kyriakos Ktenidis categorically denies the complaint

A major in-depth investigation is currently underway at AHEPA hospital of Thessalonikifollowing a document from the ACHEPA Workers’ Union, which was sent to the press representatives of the parliamentary parties, which states that a complaint has been made by a member of the Union about the re-sterilization and reuse of single-use surgical materials.

According to the document of the Workers’ Union, which is signed by the president, Stavros Karakatsanis and the general secretary, Demosthenes Michelakis, “our members complained to our Union about the re-sterilization and reuse of single-use surgery materials. According to the complaint, the above was done with the knowledge of the hospital administration and the administration of the 4th Ministry of Health and as a result of the cuts in health with all the risks that entail for the patient”.

The Union adds that all this is happening, “in a hospital that intends to start soon, according to reports, operation and paid afternoon surgeries. Again, according to the complaint, the recent removal of the Director of the Nursing Service is due to her non-compliance with the alleged event.

Because as an Association we fought and are fighting for a strong public Health System for everyone, with respect for the life and safety of patients, we unanimously denounce such practices.”

As part of the report, GRTimes contacted all parties involved, starting with the general secretary of the Workers’ Union and the signatories of the disputed document,
Demosthenes Michelakis, who however did not want to add anything more to the issue in question.

“Stick to what the Union document says. I cannot refer to anything more, as everything is under investigation,” emphasized Mr. Michelakis.

Panteliadis: The complaint is untrue – In progress EDE and investigation by the Transparency Authority

Asked to comment on the above complaint, the administrator of the AHEPA hospital, Panagiotis Panteliadis, emphasized to GRTimes that by decision of the hospital’s Board of Directors, a Sworn Administrative Examination and an investigation by the Transparency Authority have already begun in order to reveal the truth.

“What has been reported is not true, however the administration has already ordered an EDE. This complaint was made to the Union by an employee. Until the EDE is completed and until the investigation carried out by the Transparency Authority is also completed, no further action will be taken,” specifically emphasizes Mr. Panteliadis.

And he adds that “the investigation of the Transparency Authority and the conclusion that will be issued, will prove whether all this is true or not”.

At the same time, sources from the 4th Ministry of Health note that “the investigation that is being conducted is being carried out in depth and we will wait for its results”.

Ktenidis: I have never done anything like that

The director of the Vascular Surgery Clinic of the AHEPA hospital, Kyriakos Ktenidis, categorically denies the complaint, who pointed out to GRTimes, that “I have never reused such material, because it is expressly prohibited. I follow what the companies and the instructions say and I adhere to that strictly.”

Giannakos: I can’t believe it could be true

The president of the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees, Michalis Giannakos, also took a position on the issue, who, speaking to GRTimes, emphasized that if the complaint is valid, then clear instructions of the ministry are being violated.

“The complaint is very serious, but I cannot and do not want to believe that something like this has happened. There should be an in-depth investigation because if it is proven that this was happening inside the hospital, then clear instructions given by the ministry were also violated. At the same time, of course, there is also a serious risk of the spread of hospital infections.

We know that Mr. Pleuris is particularly sensitive to such issues as he himself has been in serious danger from a similar issue. This is a very serious matter which I am sure will be investigated and I repeat that I do not want to believe that it is true” emphasized Mr. Giannakos.

Sioulis: I don’t know – Extremity if it happened

For his part, the vice-president of the Association of Hospital Doctors of Thessaloniki and an employee of the AHEPA hospital, Thanasis Sioulis, stated that he has not received any knowledge of such an incident.
“Should we go to such an extreme that disposable tools are reused? I honestly don’t know, but if it happened, we are talking about something very, very big,” he said speaking to GRTimes.
