Asimakopoulou on the press conference of the rapporteur of the PEGA Committee: This is a mini-parliamentary coup

She gave a press conference by herself, presenting her indictment, completely disregarding the opinions of her colleagues and the established parliamentary procedure”, says the press representative of the New Democracy Eurogroup in a statement.

“The rapporteur of the PEGA Commission, Sophie In t’ Veld, in a ‘mini-parliamentary coup’, gave a press conference alone, presenting her indictment, completely disregarding the views of her colleagues and the established parliamentary procedure,” it says in a statement the press representative of the New Democracy Eurogroup in the European Parliament, Anna-Michelle Asimakopoulou, and immediately adds: “As the president of the PEGA Committee, Jeroen Lenaers, clarified, the draft presented by MEP In t’ Veld does not constitute her final version Committee and does not constitute, at this time, the conclusions or the final position of the PEGA Committee’.

“The MEP’s draft, In t’ Veld,” adds Ms. Asimakopoulou, “is largely based on a publication in a Greek media outlet that includes a list of persons allegedly tracked by spyware. In fact, this is the media whose publisher was “connected” to the financing of Russian oligarchs in order to acquire television channels in Greece. The draft jumps to conclusions, using assumptions and scenarios that lack foundation and factual evidence.”

As stated in the announcement: “In fact, these are the facts: From the very beginning, the Greek government stated that it did not use and does not use surveillance malware. In addition, the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, requested the resignation of those responsible for the legal connection of the MEP and PASOK president, Mr. Nikos Androulakis.

Also, the Prime Minister participated in a Pre-Day debate in Parliament at the level of party leaders, where all political forces had the opportunity to express their views and ask the Prime Minister about the issue. All the necessary parliamentary procedures were carried out and a Special Commission of Inquiry was even set up, which investigated all the allegations and concluded that there was no impropriety.

The Greek government is taking the lead across Europe with a new legislative initiative to ban the use of spyware in Greece. It has already established a second level of judicial review, aiming to strengthen the framework for legal declassification by the National Intelligence Service (NIS) for political figures. At the same time, the judicial and independent authorities of the Greek state are conducting their own investigations.

Finally, the Greek government actively contributed to all investigations and provided access to information and explanations through the Minister of State, Mr Gerapetritis, who met with the members of the PEGA Commission during their recent visit. Greece contributed substantially to the conduct of all the necessary investigations unlike other member states.

Greece has a democratically elected government and has consistently done its duty to cooperate wholeheartedly with the EU institutions on rule of law issues and will continue to work closely to bring the truth to light in relation to all of this the issues.

We cannot and will not tolerate baseless, slanderous and insulting accusations against the Prime Minister, the Greek government and ultimately our country. Accusations based on personal or political agendas,” concluded Ms. Asimakopoulou in her statement.
