The President of SYRIZA PS, Alexis Tsipras, has been touring Serres since the morning. During his tour of the central market of Serres, Mr. Tsipras discussed with citizens and shopkeepers about the extreme price increases and precision in energy, fuel and the supermarket, as well as about the dramatic decrease in incomes and turnover that they bring about , which together with the swelling of private debt bring households and businesses to new dead ends. After his tour of the city market, Mr. Tsipras made the following statement to the press representatives:

“No matter where you are in the country, you face the same insecurity, the same desperation from the citizens, from the market people who are groaning in the face of this unprecedented wave of accuracy. And unfortunately, there are no effective measures to stop the accuracy, because government policy wants this looting to continue, in order to support the few and powerful.

The government’s doctrine is to take it out of one pocket through VAT from consumers and into the pocket of the cartels through subsidies.

But this situation cannot continue like this. Within the first 15 days, the income of the citizens runs out, while today I also saw many professionals who are facing the risk of the lock in their shops.

The country is plunged into insecurity, uncertainty and the gloom of revelations, sick revelations about surveillance.

I am not at all concerned with finding answers today to yesterday’s delirium of a panicked and guilty politician. What concerns me is how we will provide answers to society’s problems. In the problems of the citizens, which I repeat, they are immersed in insecurity and uncertainty. And I believe there are answers. There is an alternative for society to stand up.

With the renationalization of PPC and a strike on cartels and profiteering in energy, fuel and food. By reducing the excise tax on fuel and the VAT on food, in order to give Greek society a breather.

By raising the salary to 800 euros and indexation, to deal with inflation, to boost income. With the support and protection of the first home of the middle class that is threatened today by all kinds of scammers who attack borrowers with their debt collection companies. With measures that will practically support society and give hope in the face of today’s despair.

That’s why I’m here, and that’s why we work. And the sooner hope comes through political change and society stands on its feet and the rule of law and the functioning of the democratic state are restored, the better it will be not for a faction in the place, the better it will be for the country in total”.

To a journalist’s question about the reduction of VAT on food, Mr. Tsipras replied:

“From one pocket will we take the VAT from consumers to give it to the cartels through subsidies? The maintenance of VAT at high levels with inflation over 10% has currently led the Greek State to have increased revenues of over 7 billion euros in the first 9 months. So there is a possibility, as long as there is political will to attack the cartels and the profits of a few”.

In a conversation he had earlier with a butcher shop owner, who described the inability of citizens to shop, Mr. Tsipras mockingly noted that “the butcher shop has become a jewelry store”, underlining the need “to stop feeding the cartels, to reduce the VAT, to for the people to breathe, so that they can come and shop.”

Following his tour, Mr. Tsipras has a meeting with employees from the Board of Directors of the Serres Labor Center, while he will also visit the Greek Organic Spirulina of Therm Nigritas, where he will have a meeting with representatives of farmers and breeders.
