Washington Post on Erdogan: He threatens that night will enter Greece- With such allies, what to do with the enemies…

Undermining NATO – “Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan (…) is completely indifferent to whether his actions undermine the cohesion of the West and the security of Europe in general – Where he is completely unacceptable is in the Aegean issue”

Publication of Washington Post it refers to the dangerous role of the Turkish President and how his attitude is undermining NATO. “Being or becoming an ally is all about agreeing on who your common enemies are and who are not. Otherwise, the concept of alliance does not exist. This admission is easier said than done, especially when an ally is lost on a trip of selfishness – as befits an Ottoman sultan. This is Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He only cares about himself and makes situations unnecessarily problematic and complex. In order to appear strong before the June elections, he creates problems for friends and enemies, while he is completely indifferent to whether his actions undermine the cohesion of the West and the security of Europe in general.”

Almost all of NATO’s 30 member states agree that Russia – under President Vladimir Putin – is the alliance’s main adversary. The word “almost” is only necessary because one member, Hungary under Prime Minister Viktor Orban, refuses to side openly with the West and Ukraine against Moscow. For his part, President Erdogan is also keeping his options open, playing both enemy and friend of Putin.

According to the Washington Post article: “Erdogan behaves even more irresponsibly in the matter of Sweden and Finland, specifically in terms of their desire to join NATO. This scenario would only be positive for all involved. Sweden and Finland would be safer under NATO Article 5, which states that an attack on one is an attack on all. And NATO would be stronger thanks to the military capability and strategic geography of the Scandinavians.”

“Erdogan is the main problem and the reason why it is impossible to speed up the process of ratifying the agreements on the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO. In fact, he is blackmailing the Swedes into adopting his view of Middle East politics. For Erdogan, all Kurdish organizations, whether based in Turkey, Syria or elsewhere, are terrorist organizations that must be banned and fought. Turkey asks Sweden to align with its own belief on this.”

It is worth noting that Sweden is a country with a strong Kurdish element, while many members of its Parliament are of Kurdish origin.

The Swedes now seem ready to meet Erdogan’s demands in the best possible way. And they have every reason to do so. For Sweden, NATO membership and security from Russia’s moods are far more important than the country’s policy towards the Kurds.

Where Erdogan is completely unacceptable on the Aegean issue. This is NATO’s worst internal tension in decades. The enmity between Greece and Turkey is nothing new. However, it seems that we have finally moved from words to actions. The Greeks complain that the Turks are constantly violating Greek territorial waters and airspace. The Turks accuse the Greeks of harassing Turkish aircraft.

The Washington Post shares with its readers more information about the attitude of the Turkish President and wonders “With such allies, what to do with enemies? The Turkish President openly threatens Greece that he will enter Greece at night… Yes, you read that right. Erdogan is threatening another NATO member with war.”

The article continues, “All alliances, like families, have their tensions. And Erdogan has been playing the role of the black sheep for years now. But what is going on in Erdogan’s mind? Is a bully playing it in the run-up to an election? Is he seeking military deals with the US? Does he want to rebuild Turkey in the image of the Ottomans, as Putin imagines the empire of the Tsars? And above all, can Erdogan be considered a reliable ally in the event of war?”

The times we live in are too serious for such distractions. The West must remain united and strong. For this, we must put aside old but empty controversies. The goal should be one and only. Not to allow Putin to escalate and expand his war. And the Turks should remind their President that such a thing would be to the benefit of both Turkey and NATO.
