“We have international law on our side. We remain firm on the line of a solution, in accordance with the decisions of the UN” the president of PASOK pointed out about the Cyprus problem.
Turkey’s leadership, against the backdrop of the tolerance shown by its partners and allies for years in its revisionist strategy, is behaving as an international troublemaker from the Caucasus to Syria and the south-eastern Mediterranean, the president of PASOK – Movement for Change stressed on Friday Nikos Androulakis at the presentation of the book “Record” by the former president of the Cypriot House of Representatives Giannakis Omirou.

The speech of PASOK president Nikos Androulakis in detail
“Dear President,
Dear ladies and gentlemen
I am particularly happy that an important book about the Cyprus issue is being presented today, which is not just a Record, but a soul testimony by a Patriot, fighter for Democracy, Giannakis Omirou.
He narrates events of the historical course of Megalonis, as he himself experienced them, already from his student years with the struggle of ’55-’59, recounting some of the most significant moments in the history of Cyprus.
The timing brought the book to be presented one day after the anniversary of November 17, reminding us that Homer was actively involved in the defense of the Republic, in Greece and Cyprus. A student in Athens, an active member of the “Palmos” student faction associated with Archbishop Makarios, he participated in the struggles against the dictatorship of the colonels, in the occupation of the Law School and in the Polytechnic Uprising.
His resistance action culminated in his brave stand against the treacherous coup of July 15, 1974 against Archbishop Makarios.
He was elected Member of Parliament for Paphos on the EDEK ballot during the elections of May 1981. He cleared an important route in which he had the great burden of succeeding the late Vasos Lyssaridis.
Today’s facts, and the escalation of Turkey’s challenges, show that the passage of time does not always improve conditions.
The leadership of the neighboring country, against the backdrop of the tolerance shown for years by partners and allies in its revisionist strategy, is behaving like an international troublemaker from the Caucasus to Syria and the south-eastern Mediterranean. It brutally violates human rights within itself, directly challenges our national sovereignty and true to its doctrine of definitive partition and the creation of two separate state entities in Cyprus, it carries out unacceptable provocations in Varosia, violating international law and UN resolutions. Unfortunately, there is no interlocutor on the Turkish Cypriot side as Mustafa Akinci was.
Friends, revisionism and tolerance of such practices are unacceptable and Europe is called upon to rise to the occasion. Only through a common foreign and defense policy will these dangerous logics be prevented.
Today the Cyprus issue is an international and European problem and the accession of Cyprus to the European Union was one of the greatest successes of Greek foreign policy and the nation after the Post-colonialism.
The answer to the fatigue or even the disappointment about the course of the Cypriot, is the plan and the strategy. With international law and the European community as an ally.
Giannakis Omirou writes about the Procrustean logic of the two states, which is also popular within the Greek Cypriot side: “Whatever the real reason for this innovative position on a two-state solution, it is certain that its devotees have not sufficiently appreciated the realizable but also the sustainability of such a choice and here’s why: Firstly, – notes Giannakis Omirou – the international community opposes solutions of secession, separation of states and the creation of new state formations by dissolving pre-existing state entities.
Secondly, the resolutions of the UN Security Council and other International and Regional Organizations explicitly reject such a solution. And thirdly, the European Union of which Cyprus is an equal member as one and a single country, will be categorically against the dismemberment of a small European state and the creation of two state entities”.
I mention this passage because it is useful to be reminded of it.
It is the duty of all the forces of Hellenism to restart the dialogue between the two communities on the basis of UN resolutions and International Law.
We have international law on our side. We remain firm on the line of a solution, in accordance with the UN resolutions, without occupying troops and guarantees of third countries. After all, how can there be an occupation army and guarantees in an EU member state.
We are fighting for a Cyprus of peaceful coexistence and prosperity, and in this fight the legacy of Giannakis Omiros is a compass. I wish the book a safe journey. Its readers will get a clear and documented picture of the developments in the Cyprus issue in recent decades.”
