Fierce political confrontation intensifies against the background of reports on surveillance – The government talks about novels without facts and documentation

By Penelope Galliou

The way of Justice and the Parliament shows the government in order to answer the questions raised by the surveillance case and the new publications that present new aspects of it and fuel the political confrontation between the government and opposition parties around the issue.

The third article in a row of the newspaper “Documento” and its claims that EYP and Predator were operating in addition and that 5 persons who were monitored with the malicious software were simultaneously in a legal connection with the EYP, once again poured water into the mill of the fierce political confrontation, with the government through its representative Yiannis Oikonomou to talk about a “fiction” without facts and evidence while SYRIZA makes a reason for confirmation of Mitsotakis’ guilt.

In the argument developed by the government from the first moment, the government representative insisted for the third Sunday, focusing on the fact that the publications they do not present facts and evidence to document the complaints. “For another week, fanciful claims are being made, without any evidence whatsoever. This week the novels are also interspersed with “spy stories”” Mr. Economou commented, among other things, and added “Our firm position is that politically there is nothing more frightful and dangerous than the unsubstantiated imagination. Especially since the imagination is more vivid in the dark than in the broad light. It is the work and duty of the Judiciary to investigate all allegations and stories published. which will give definitive answers about the action of surveillance software in Greece, from their initial appearance and not only for a limited period of time”.

Government sources recalled that from the first moment the issue arose, the clarification was undertaken by Justice, which will reach the end in order to shed a lot of light on the case and assign the responsibilities to whoever bears them. They meaningfully pointed out that the fact that the target of surveillance and malicious software is primarily the government itself and its top executives should not be forgotten, as well as the fact that the government, moving institutionally, drafted and brought to public consultation a bill for the further protection against surveillance and malicious software, which will also go through Parliament within the week.

The government, moreover, insists on “seeing” SYRIZA as the instigator of the toxic climate that tends to establish itself in the country’s political life in the run-up to the elections. “SYRIZA and its affiliates have decided to march to the elections with weapons of toxicity and slander, since they have nothing substantial and useful to contribute to the country and society. The government has confidence in the judiciary and remains committed to the production of work to protect the quality of life of citizens from international accuracy, the safeguarding of the Motherland from outside intrigues and the institutional armoring of our state,” emphasized the government representative.

Koumoundourou, however, from her side insists on targeting the prime minister, fully adopting the publications of Costas Vaxevani’s newspaper. She insists on giving a mocking character to her comments with the representative of SYRIZA Nasos Iliopoulos to observe that “Their claims would indeed be laughable if their actions were not so dangerous for democracy”. “The response of the government representative to new revealing publications of the Sunday press is so funny that it neither more nor less invites us to express our support for our “bad-looking” prime minister who himself was the target of surveillance” he said in a statement and added “Neither word on whether they will request answers through the ADAE from the mobile phone companies, on whether they were monitoring ministers, members of the armed forces, MEPs and journalists. Not even a word about the publication of the TO BIMA newspaper which reveals that the illegal predator software was operated by detached police officers whose names and addresses we now know”.

The Minister of Citizen Protection described the accusations as “monstrosity”. Takis Theodorikakos, speaking to SKAI and Giorgos Autias. “One issue is the truth and one issue is monstrosity” he stated and underlined the quick reflexes shown by the government as soon as the monitoring of Androulakis was revealed with the intervention of the prime minister himself, while also noting the legislative initiative of the government that brings important changes, adding that “we should all accept that the EYP is necessary, it has helped in critical moments, it must operate in a legitimate, democratic and relatively transparent manner, as far as its duties allow”.

And Mr. Theodorikakos, spoke about an operation to slander the prime minister and questioned the existence of evidence since these are not presented, stating “I don’t see evidence. If they have evidence they should go to the prosecutor, otherwise they should shut up and find something serious to say to the Greek people. Not monstrosities that surpass all logic. Stop this merry-go-round” said Mr. Theodorikakos.

The president of PASOK-KINAL, Nikos Androulakis, also launched fire against the government on the occasion of the new publications, also targeting the Maximos Palace. EYP at the Maximos Palace” argued Mr. Androulakis. Although Mr. Androulakis appears in a positive mood for the government’s legislative initiative regarding the monitoring framework, he nevertheless points out that at least three points remain problematic and need to be corrected. As he emphasizes, “what continues to infuriate is its (the current government’s) obsession with obscuring its actions, the lack of any willingness to be accountable, for a case that brutally damages the prestige of our institutions and discredits the country internationally” .

Speaking about the surveillance, G.G. spoke of dirty history. KKE’s Dimitris Koutsoubas also criticizing the draft law under consultation on EYP and malicious software, arguing that it is a legislative construct that confirms the doctrine “no one is exempt from surveillance”.

However, the consultation on the controversial bill is expected to be completed within the current week and then it is expected to be submitted to the Parliament.
